We hope this work will accelerate SV2 Partners’ social change and equity journeys, help us build strong relationships in service of common goals, and lead to impact both in the chosen community and in SV2 as an organization. We are committed to sharing power, broadening the voices at the table, and growing in trust-based philanthropy. Redwood City Together was selected in December 2022 as the new Community Initiative Grantee Partner, and will receive $500,000 of unrestricted funding over the next three years. This amazing Grantee Partner was selected by a Core Team of community leaders, SV2 Partners, and staff who made this grant decision on behalf of SV2. Having community leaders so deeply involved in shaping a grantmaking strategy and funding allocation is a significant step for SV2 towards participatory grantmaking, and is a way we are seeking to live our value of sharing power. Redwood City Together advances the success of youth and families in Redwood City and North Fair Oaks through community collaboration. Through our learning process about Redwood City Together, the Core Team members were impressed by Redwood City Together’s strong BIPOC leadership, with commitment to developing community leadership in partner agencies; strong connections both to grassroots community and to city government; systems-level thinking and partnerships to drive systems change; inclusion of youth voice; deep partnerships with many community based organizations, including multiple SV2 Grantee Partners in the North Fair Oaks community; many entry points and stated desire for engagement with SV2 Partners in various volunteer and engagement roles We are so excited to partner with this dynamic and impactful initiative working deeply in their community! We are especially focused on allocating capital to founders from underrepresented backgrounds. SV2 is looking for three types of return: social or environmental impact, financial return, and “return on learning” – our Partners learn by doing, as they hear pitches, conduct diligence, and allocate SV2’s pooled capital. Our collaborative practice has a ripple effect: as Partners gain skills and experience, they may choose to begin or deepen their own impact investing practice, aligning their capital allocation with their personal values. How does it work? SV2 hosts a monthly meeting on Zoom to hear pitches from two early stage, impact focused companies. At any given meeting, there is a mix of seasoned and newer investors; all experience levels are welcome. Many Partners attend pitch meetings regularly, and others attend on a drop-in basis. SV2’s Investment Committee meets directly after the pitch meeting to vote on potential investments and make other strategic recommendations for SV2’s portfolio and impact investing work. After each monthly pitch meeting, if there is interest in moving either company forward, a small team of Partners conducts diligence over 3-4 weeks, using a structured format. Diligence is presented to SV2’s Investment Committee at the following month’s meeting. Investment Committee members vote on every deal, and Diligence Team members vote on the deal on which they conducted diligence. SV2 typically invests at the pre-seed or seed stage, and our check size is $25K – $50K. We invest across many sectors, including climate, education, and economic opportunity. Just as with our grantmaking, investments are made using pooled funding that Partners contribute to SV2. When our investments make a return, the money cycles back into SV2’s mission. We focus on funding organizations with diverse teams representative of the communities they serve. Our collaborative practice has a ripple effect: Partners’ personal giving approaches are shaped by the best practices they learn at SV2. In addition, as Partners are exposed to local nonprofits doing great work, many choose to personally support organizations they learn about through SV2. How does it work? SV2 hosts one Grant Round in the Fall and one in the Spring, each focused on a different topic area – recent sectors have included Education Equity, Economic Inclusion, Environmental Justice, Mental Health & Wellbeing, and Tech for Good. In these collaborative, experiential grantmaking processes, SV2 Partners learn about an issue area, get to know Bay Area nonprofits working in that sector, and participate in a diligence approach that incorporates best practices in trust-based philanthropy. Following this learning and diligence, participants select two nonprofits to receive three-year, unrestricted general operating support grants of between $75,000 – $100,000. The new Grantees also select one or two SV2 Partners to be their Partner Champion liaisons, providing Beyond the Dollars support throughout the three year grant period. Grant Rounds are typically led by two Partner Leaders and a staff member, who plan the content of each meeting, teach participants how to perform nonprofit due diligence, and lead the group in discussion and decision-making. Participants are encouraged to participate as fully as possible, but we welcome people to drop in at any time in the four month process. Grant Round Process: Open Call and Research: SV2 puts out an open call for nonprofit nominations, typically receiving 40-60 names of nonprofits working in the Bay Area on that issue area. A research team of Partners conducts desk top research and narrows the list to five finalist organizations. Meeting #1: Expert speakers share their knowledge and perspectives about the issue area with Grant Round participants. Meeting #2: The five finalist organizations introduce themselves and their work to Grant Round participants. Financial Diligence and Coffee Chats: Participants volunteer to do financial analysis using SV2’s structured worksheet. Small teams of participants also engage in Zoom calls with each finalist, using a structured set of questions. The notes from these “Coffee Chats” take the place of a written grant proposal. Meeting #3: Participants discuss their learnings from the Financial Worksheets and the Coffee Chats. Meeting #4: After another round of discussion, participants select two of the finalists to become three year Grantees. The other three finalists each receive an honorarium for their participation in our process. Organizations seeking grant funding from SV2 should: Be a 501(c)(3) or fiscally sponsored Deliver programs and have an executive presence in the Bay Area—specifically San Mateo, Santa Clara, San Francisco, and/or Alameda counties. If the organization has national reach, it must have a local office with an Executive Director and a local Board of Directors Not have previously received an SV2 three-year grant Have annual revenue of approximately $500K–$4M Be in a growth stage with a proven model and early evidence of impact Be in a period of strengthening internal organizational capacity Typically, be a younger organization (if older, we’re looking for a clear renewal or new growth phase) Address root causes by creating conditions that reduce the prevalence of an issue Meet Our Current Grantees "SV2's Grant Rounds help me to be more conscious of how I make my decisions on the organizations I choose to be involved in from a funding or volunteering perspective." SV2 is a nonprofit learning community of everyday givers committed to accelerating equity through grantmaking and impact investing for a thriving Bay Area and world. SV2 activates local changemakers who want to connect, learn, and practice values-aligned giving and investing in community. Our mission is to unleash the resources and talents of the Bay Area community to achieve meaningful social impact. We engage Donor Partners directly in providing unrestricted grant funding to Bay Area nonprofits and making founder-friendly investments in early-stage social enterprises and impact funds making a global impact. Since 1998, SV2 has invested in over 200 social ventures. Our Donor Partners learn best practices through this collective funding work and also in immersive learning workshops and by “getting proximate” with local community leaders and organizations. Grantmaking: We take a trust-based philanthropy approach, supporting mission-driven nonprofits in the Bay Area with unrestricted multi-year grants and Beyond the Dollars support. We focus on funding organizations with diverse teams representative of the communities they serve. Impact Investing: We make investments in early stage companies with social or environmental impact at the core of their business model. We are especially focused on allocating capital to founders from underrepresented backgrounds. Immersive Learning: We offer week-long immersive learning trips in California and the U.S. South, learning workshops on topics like nonprofit financial review, board service, and due diligence training, and peer cohorts focused on justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. Some distinctives of our work: We’re focused on local givers committing human, financial, and social capital for local impact We engage our donors in innovative best practices through “learning by doing” opportunities We increase the pool of active givers who understand community-driven solutions A commitment to equity, power-sharing, and mindfulness underpins our work SV2 defines success in two ways: our Donor Partners become more equitable, effective, and generous givers as a result of our work, and our Grantee and Investee Partners become more able to grow their impact as a result of our unrestricted funding and capacity-building Beyond-the-Dollars support. OUR VISION We envision a more equitable and sustainable Bay Area and world where everyone thrives. Our Core Values Our core values anchor our community and how we approach all of our work together. Impact We leverage the extraordinary resources and talents of Silicon Valley leaders and social innovators to create measurable positive impact in our community and world. Experiential Learning We learn by doing, challenging ourselves to expand our knowledge, enhance our skills, and broaden our perspectives. Shared Leadership We develop emerging and seasoned leaders for social change and support them on their personal leadership journeys through experiential learning, peer leadership opportunities and collective responsibility for the success of our work. Innovation We seek bold, creative approaches to our work, embracing both proven methods and new models for social impact. Empathy We strive to foster empathy and compassion, serve those most vulnerable in society, and support opportunity and equity for all people. Collaborative Community We are building a welcoming group of active socially responsible community members who believe in the power of creating social impact together. The trip will have a special focus on water, sustainable agriculture, and farmworker experiences. Participants will learn as they listen deeply to community members’ experiences, and this will help us to identify the most effective solutions to foster economic inclusion and environmental justice in local communities. The trip is designed around dialogue with local community leaders and organizations in Modesto and in the Salinas / Watsonville area. Those who take this learning journey will broaden their California lens, get to know amazing local leaders and resilient communities, and be inspired to shape a more just and equitable future for our beautiful and challenging state. Join us! Dates: September 26-29, 2025 Cost: $3,000 per person Experiences will include: Participating in a listening circle to understand how local farmworkers are affected by contaminated well water, and how they are advocating for water justice Walking through the almond orchard of a second-generation almond rancher to learn about her sustainable agriculture practices Visiting a migrant farmworker camp and hearing the life journeys of women field workers Bonding with your fellow SV2 Partners on the bus and during late-night hotel chats and much more! Learning Outcomes: Be better informed about priorities, issues, and challenges for California, especially water, agriculture, and farmworkers Understand how issue areas are related to each other Understand how different parts of the state are connected Learn how challenges are being addressed in different communities Gain confidence is learning how to spot and support opportunities Learn success stories and replicability in other communities and other work Our learning will influence how we engage with and fund social impact organizations, emphasizing a renewed commitment to equity practices and actions driven by compassion. We also anticipate gaining a deeper understanding of the importance of supporting community-level upstream efforts and developing a more strategic approach to advocacy tools for systemic change. We value the time that agencies dedicate to us and want to ensure that our learning process is not extractive of local communities. To honor this commitment, we are offering honoraria to all organizations that meet with us. These honoraria represent a significant portion of the trip costs. If you have questions about the California Equity Journey or want to indicate your interest in the trip before registering, please email Jody Chang at
