Bioplastics and Fiber Ware are contamination in your green cart. Bioplastics and chemicals in fiber ware become contamination in compost. What Are Bioplastics? Bioplastics are a type of plastic made from natural materials instead of the usual petroleum-based sources. These natural materials can include things like corn starch, sugarcane, and even potato starch. Currently, most bio-based plastics are still partially composed of fossil-fuel based plastics. Click here for more info. Here’s a simple breakdown: Natural Sources: Unlike traditional, petroleum-based plastics, bioplastics are partially made from plants or other natural resources. Eco-Friendly Goals: They are designed to be more environmentally friendly. Some bioplastics are biodegradable, meaning they can break down more easily in the environment compared to regular plastics but usually not fully compostable. Most bioplastics still remain in the compost at the end of processing and must be screened out prior to the compost being sold. In essence, bioplastics are a step in the right direction in replacing single-use-plastics but not the solution. Example of some bioplastic products: What Are Fiber Ware Containers and How Are They Made Water/Grease Resistant? Fiber ware containers are eco-friendly take-out boxes made from natural plant materials like sugarcane, bamboo, or wheat straw. They are popular because they are not created from virgin plastics, making them a better choice for the environment. How Fiber Ware Containers Are Made Water and Grease Resistant: To handle oily or moist foods without leaking or getting soggy, fiber ware containers need to be water and grease resistant. This is typically achieved in two ways: Chemical Coating: Human-made chemicals are used to create a barrier to prevent water and grease from soaking through the container. How It Works: The chemicals are applied to the surface of the fiber ware, making it slick and resistant to liquids and oils. Concerns: These chemicals do not break down easily in the environment and can accumulate over time, potentially causing health and environmental issues. Plastic Linings: What Are Plastic Linings? A thin layer of plastic is sometimes added to the inside of the fiber ware container. How It Works: The plastic lining provides a waterproof and grease-proof barrier, preventing the container from becoming soggy or leaking. Concerns: While effective, plastic linings can negate some of the environmental benefits of using biodegradable materials because the plastic does not break down easily. Why Water and Grease Resistance Is Important: Keeps Food Secure: The resistance to water and grease ensures that the container holds up well, even with oily or saucy foods, preventing leaks and spills. Maintains Container Integrity: This helps keep the container sturdy and prevents it from falling apart or becoming soggy when holding moist or greasy food items. Fiber ware containers offer a sustainable option for food packaging by using natural materials. However, the methods used to make them water and grease resistant, including chemicals and plastic linings, come with their own set of environmental and health concerns. What Does Contamination in a Green Cart Mean? Contamination in a green cart means non-compostable materials are mixed with compostable organic waste. Green carts are for collecting food scraps and yard waste for composting. When inappropriate items are included, they disrupt the composting process and reduce the quality of the finished compost. Common Contaminants and Issues: Plastic Bags and Containers: Do not decompose and introduce microplastics. Non-Compostable Food Packaging: May not break down properly. Pet Waste: Contains harmful bacteria and parasites. Household Trash: Includes glass, metal, and non-organic materials, causing contamination and safety hazards. Chemically Treated Wood: Contains toxic chemicals. Consequences of Contamination: Disrupted Composting: Interferes with organic material breakdown. Lower Quality Compost: Results in poor-quality compost. Health and Safety Risks: Harmful to workers and the environment. Increased Costs: Requires extra sorting and processing. Preventing Contamination: Proper Sorting: Only place accepted organic waste lik Blue Curbside Cart – Salinas Valley Solid Waste Authority Skip to content Search Meetings & Agenda Your Waste Hauler Contact Us About At Home What Goes Where? View the recording and our presentation slides here. View Recording 6/13/23 View Recording 6/22/23 Presentation Slides Why is it important? California Laws AB 341, AB 1826, and SB 1383 require businesses and multifamily complexes to implement recycling programs for solid waste and organic waste - now including food scraps. These laws are put in place to reduce the amount of solid waste that enters our local landfill and to combat climate change. To avoid penalties, fines, and to do your part in protecting the environment, it is important to implement these recycling programs at your apartment complex or condominiums. × Mixed Recycling Unlike single-family homes, most apartment complexes and condominiums don’t have individual garbage, recycling, and yard waste carts for each unit. Instead, collection containers are located in one central area on the ground floor or outside the building. Look for carts or dumpsters marked “recycling”. The materials accepted are the same as for single-family homes in your city. What to Recycle Food Scraps Recycling In an effort to reduce the amount of waste sent to the landfill, while also reducing methane gas emissions, SB 1383 was signed into California law that requires everyone to recycle their food scraps. When you recycle your food scraps, they can now become a nutrient-rich soil amendment called compost that goes back into our farms and home gardens. Check out our tips and tricks on how to recycle your food scraps using the link below! If It Grows, It Goes! Organic waste (organics) means food scraps, food-soiled paper waste that is mixed in with food waste, yard waste, landscape and pruning waste, and nonhazardous wood waste. This law also requires that on and after January 1, 2016, local jurisdictions across the state implement an organic waste recycling program to divert organic waste generated by businesses. The law phases in the requirements over several years. Business and multifamily complexes must start recycling organic waste by the following dates: January 1, 2017 generators of 4 or more cubic yards of organic waste per week January 1, 2019 generators of 4 or more cubic yards of solid waste per week January 1, 2020 generator of 2 or more cubic yards of solid waste per week To learn more about the proper disposal and recycling of organic materials or to schedule a FREE Waste Assessment to start or improve an organics recycling program at your facility please call Salinas Valley Recycles (831) 775-3000. For more information on AB 1826 please visit the CalRecycle web site . The purpose of these laws is to: Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by diverting commercial solid waste and organics to recycling efforts Expand recycling opportunities in California Conserve and reclaim natural resources to extend the life of our local landfill Organics Recycling laws will increase the diversion of commercial solid waste and organics to be recycled, thereby reducing disposal fees for businesses and meeting the statewide waste diversion goal of 75% by 2020. Business Regulation Guide: Only Compostable BPI-approved bags are allowed in the food waste bin. BPI certifies the bags meet: ASTM D6400 or ASTM D6868 standards to effectively compost in a commercial composting system. Ask your supplier for BPI Certified Compostable Bags. They must have this logo on the box or product. If your supplier does not carry BPI compostable bags, you can find a vendor through the BPI site here . Alisal Union School District A Success Story New Republic Elementary School School Spotlight Edible Food Recovery As a part of California SB 1383, schools are required to donate excess edible food. Food Scrap Recycling The second part of SB 1383 requires schools to recycle all of their food scraps from all meal and snack services. EDIBLE FOOD RECOVERY - HOW YOU ARE HELPING The USDA allows students to save food items for consumption outside of a meal service area as long as the food items do not require cooling or heating. Examples of acceptable food items to consume later are a whole piece of fruit or a bag of baby carrots. Traveling Apple Policy In an effort to reduce food waste and encourage the consumption of food served, many food service operations have established share tables. Share tables are carts or tables where children can place unconsumed food and beverage items (i.e., prepackaged food and beverages; unopened, wrapped food and beverages; or food items with a peel) that they choose to not eat or drink. These tables provide an opportunity for other children to take additional helpings of food or beverages at no cost. Food Share Tables Allow the food placed on the sharing tables that is not taken by a pupil during the course of a regular school meal time in accordance with the CalCode, Section 114079, subparagraph (A), to be donated to a food bank or any other nonprofit charitable organization. A gift from the Global Data Registry

When the Global Data Registry crawled https://svswa.org/, we found no structured data — the language AI systems use to understand and describe a business online.

Schema is how ChatGPT, Google, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity know what your business does and how to describe you accurately to your customers. Without it, AI systems are guessing.

The most important field in this block is sameAs — a verified edge connecting your website to your permanent record at the Global Data Registry. This is a free, confirmed link to a real verified source. It costs nothing and gives your website a confirmed node in the graph that AI systems traverse when building answers about your business.

Copy the block below and paste it into the <head> of your website. Or drop it into ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini and ask it to extend it with your full business details — that is the fastest path to a complete schema record.

▶   What is schema?

Schema is a standard vocabulary maintained at schema.org that lets websites describe themselves in a language machines can read. When you add schema to your website, you are telling AI systems, search engines, and knowledge graphs exactly what your business is and how it connects to the rest of the web.
