What do we do?
A School for Life - We create opportunities for children to develop a deep understanding of how it is to live in a fulfilling and contributive way that builds a sense of stability, happiness, and belonging.
Small Class Sizes - We create a learning environment of small classes (10-20 students) within which children can experience their full potential, capabilities, capacities, skills, personal challenges, and ways of relating to the world and all that lives within it.

Why do we do it?
We believe that in a time when the future is unpredictable, it is important to develop an inner picture, independent of circumstances, of what a meaningful inner life can be. This supports health on a physical, mental and spiritual level.
When we know our capabilities, challenges, and how to overcome them, we have a sound foundation upon which to move into whatever circumstances may meet us, with a sense of confidence.

How do we do it?
Learning for Life - We do it by allowing school to be a “way of life” rather than a place where you come to prove what you know or what you don’t know. We allow each child the opportunity to feel what it is like to lead a meaningful, fulfilled life. It is not something one has to postpone until school is over. School itself is alive, real, authentic, with immediate possibilities for sensory experiences and thoughtful reflection.

In this setting, curiosity and creativity flourish. Children participate in meaningful tasks that develop coordination, independence, and cooperative social skills while unfolding imaginative capacities that build a strong foundation for life and later academics. Within our core tenant, childhood is preserved and respected through slowing down and allowing children to be children. Our kindergartners sing, move, make art, work in the garden, make soup, bake bread, share meals, clean up, listen to stories, go on adventures in nature, and, of course, play! Free play is the most important learning experience for kindergarteners and is given a key place during the course of the day. During play, we step back and observe the children in order to ensure development towards well-being and health. When necessary, the teachers step in to support their social interactions and ensure they play with each other in a healthy manner. Every child must feel seen, heard, and understood. Our Kindergarten simulates a daily and weekly form that allows for calm and ease. Within this form there is room for flexibility, spontaneity and creativity. When there is a natural rhythm to the day, children feel more at ease, which in turn creates smoother transitions and overall less of a need for loving discipline. Kindergarten children begin their day with music and movement in what we call Morning Circle where they are welcomed by the older children with a song creating a strong sense of family and community. After Morning Circle, they go to their own space to engage in teacher-led activities such as recitation, painting, beeswax, clay, handwork, woodwork, and seasonal crafts. Tools and toys are made of natural materials offering the children a strong sensory experience to develop their fine motor skills. This artistic work guides young children toward the ability to concentrate for longer periods of time but as an experience filled with joy rather than stress. In Kindergarten, stories from around the world are shared with the children, bringing to life human qualities, such as courage, kindness and honesty. These stories strengthen their listening skills, memory skills, and vocabulary. Through oral storytelling, the children create their own inner pictures free and uncluttered by adult intervention and animations on a screen. We strongly encourage screen free childhood. Each week, our kindergarteners head off campus to hike woodland trails, explore coastal paths, and play freely in the beaches and forests around us. We care deeply for our parents/guardians and support them as they set boundaries, slow down, tell stories and create more joy. We thank you for the opportunity for us to be a part of your child's precious early years. General Info: The entry age is 4 years, 9 months though readiness is always considered individually. Kindergarten Hours 8:10am-3:10pm, 5 days a week. The annual tuition for the 2025-26 school year is $24,000. Payments are made annually, quarterly, or monthly. We offer Tuition Adjustment to qualified applicants. The application deadline for the 2026-27 school year is January 26th, 2026. Here, we continually work to have no gap; our tuition is intentionally set at a financial level that allows families from a wide range of backgrounds to be part of the school and, yet, at a level that addresses our fiscal needs. Operating in a high-cost locale, NVS is very proud to offer a tuition lower than all other independent schools in our area. Our Annual Fund allows the school to constantly evaluate, envision and evolve the school to meet the children's needs now and in the future. Our teaching team is responsive, deeply dedicated and driven. The Annual Fund is an investment in the NVS process. Most of our tax-deductible donations are given as lump sums or monthly contributions. For those friends of the New Village School, we especially welcome your donations as part of our extended family. The children discover the joy of learning while the school nurtures their unique capabilities. We welcome remarkable students from all backgrounds, and the families of the New Village School reflect the economic diversity of our community. We deliberately keep tuition lower than other independent schools so that a New Village School education is affordable. In addition, we offer Tuition Adjustments so that no family should hesitate to apply for admission because of the inability to pay full tuition. Like many independent schools in Marin and San Francisco, we use the Clarity Application to guide our Tuition Adjustment process, which is based upon a family’s financial need and the school’s Tuition Adjustment budget. After a decision to offer admission is shared with the family, we invite families seeking Tuition Adjustments into a private conversation about their ability to pay, and all Tuition Adjustment applications and discussions remain confidential. If you are seeking a Tuition Adjustment, please complete the Clarity Application by Monday, January 26, 2026 . The mobile-friendly application typically takes less than 30 minutes to complete. At the end of the application, there is a $60 fee to Clarity to submit. If you need help completing your Clarity Application, there is in-app support available through the “Help” button at the bottom left of the screen as well as email and phone support at

Their renewable inner resources will help them thrive in a profoundly changing world. What Is the New Village? We have created a new extended family: the new village. This is a place in which parents feel safe in the knowledge that everyone feels responsible for everyone’s well-being. Our neighborhoods as we once knew them have changed and our school addresses the need for community. In that way our school is a portable neighborhood and our children are raised in a community of caring individuals. In the classroom, we have created a natural extended family. We do not always separate the children artificially by grades. Indeed, all the children interact with each other at various points throughout the day. We believe in long-term relationships. Children respond with feelings of camaraderie, commitment, and a profound sense of trust. Teachers benefit from the time and ability to deeply understand and come to know the children, as well as how best to help them develop their abilities. Finally, the New Village is a community of learners – children and adults – who never give up trying to discover even more about ourselves. Because of this, we strive to create an atmosphere in which everyone feels safe to be vulnerable, honest and authentic. How Is the New Village School Governed? The basic premise is that everyone in the community feels responsible for the well-being of, above all, the children but also of one another and the school. The school is seen as a living organism that is growing and changing. “Form follows function” underscores any governance structure chosen for a given phase of the school’s development. The New Village School has a volunteer Board of Directors comprised of elected community members, parents, and representatives of the Management Team, which is responsible for the legal and fiscal health of the school. The school is managed by its Management Team which is made up of all full-time teachers. All teachers engaged with the children belong to the Teaching Team. The Board includes: Name Position GEOFF BARNEBY BOARD CHAIR / PRESIDENT ANNA LOUIE TREASURER GREG PRICE SECRETARY AMY TODD MEMBER NICOLAY KREIDLER MEMBER YANA MEYDBRAY MANAGEMENT TEAM REPRESENTATIVE CLAUDIO SALUSSO MANAGEMENT TEAM REPRESENTATIVE We are grateful to all of our board members who have supported our school. All teachers who work with the school are part of our Teaching Team. In our school, the teachers see themselves as a team of adults who are there to provide absolute solidarity, warmth, love and care for the children. We create an atmosphere in which children can feel safe to be who they are. We are here to help them uncover and discover who they are. We believe that helping children develop a strong inner sense of self and to develop the ability to love themselves is absolutely critical. The teachers are committed to supporting each other in all aspects of their work and to model how human beings can be with each other in the best possible way. We observe the children as they move through their day and through continual conversation, try and make sure that each child feels seen and acknowledged. 100 Ebbtide Avenue, Suite 144 Sausalito, California, 94965 415 289 0889

The world is beautiful. The world is true. These are the values that underscore the grade school journey. We nurture the whole child, body, mind and spirit, through story, reflection, adventure, play, and artistic work that fosters all the senses. Our teachers meet the temperament and unique traits of each child to allow their innate self-motivation to shine through. At our school social-and-emotional learning, SEL, is not a newly discovered school subject or an add-on to the onslaught of information that defines other approaches. Every aspect of the day has a social dimension, and every subject is meant to stir emotions and develop passions. Doing what is good, loving what is good, and understanding what is good, means gradual harmonizing of will forces, feeling, and thinking to allow for the whole healthy human being to pursue, in freedom, their unique destiny. In our grade school teaching and learning take place in “blocks.” Thematic blocks are periods of time when the class dives deeply into a subject integrating the conceptual lessons with art, hands-on tasks, and individualized projects. All social studies (history, geography…), and science courses are taught in this way. In the early grades, language arts and math are taught in this manner as well. One important function of learning in blocks is to keep a high level of enthusiasm and buoyancy with each new subject and the unique experiences that accompany it. The other goal is to serve through the subject the developmental needs of each grade. No subject is relevant if it doesn't help the children to grow, as growing is the main thing they need to do at this time in their lives. Skills classes and subjects that require continued practice are taught as tracks. These include Spanish, world languages, handwork, woodwork, and games. Classroom Without Walls (CWoW) Learning does not only happen inside the classroom. Once a week after their morning lesson, each grade leaves the campus with our CWoW outdoor education teachers to visit local beaches and forests, observe wildlife, study plant life, and explore ocean life. Additionally, our children practice gardening, cooking, and animal husbandry at our school gardens and local farms as part of the CWoW program. Starting in 3rd grade our students begin formative overnight class trips - each one a milestone in their development. 3rd Grade: One night camping trip in beautiful redwoods or farm 4th Grade: Five day trip to Headwaters Outdoor School in Mt. Shasta 5th Grade: One week camping trip in Joshua Tree or Pinnacles National Park World Language At the New Village School, language learning opens doors to new cultures and ways of thinking. From 1st through 8th grade, every student studies Spanish alongside an introduction to a second foreign language—Punjabi, Japanese, or Russian—chosen in 1st grade. Intentionally, the second language is not another Romance or Germanic language, like Spanish or English. This dual-language approach fosters communication skills, global awareness and additional cognitive flexibility and spatial awareness. Learning two languages has enormous benefits for brain development. It enhances cognitive abilities like problem-solving, memory, and creativity. Bilingual students are more flexible thinkers, better multitaskers, and develop a greater sense of empathy and cultural understanding. By learning two languages, our students sharpen their minds and expand their world views. Science We follow a phenomenological approach to science, which implies a lot of time is devoted to the direct experience and observation of phenomena and to building the awareness that human narratives, models, and theories are constantly evolving and being debunked by new, more expansive ones. This approach to science and the scientific method celebrates currently revered theories but does not exalt them as ultimate truths; instead, it reveres the rigor and the love that goes into the process of acquiring knowledge. The same reverence imbues all discourse about cultures and the “moral truths” that come to the fore in each time and place making up the highest values shared in civil society. In middle school the students apply the rigorous methods of scientific inquiry. At the same time, they begin to realize that consensus on what is true and good is the only way humans can work together. Developing a rigorous critical mind gives us greater agency, and it must also give us a greater ability to work together with other fellow humans, and to serve and heal the world. An example of how scientific discourse serves a moral goal is in how Darwin's theory of evolution is taught. This theory tells us, among other things, that there is a continuum in our development in relation to our fellow mammals. At the same time, it also points to radical differences that have made Sapiens the dominant species on the planet and the only one, as far as we know, to apply “collective learning” to the development of tools and the solving of moral dilemmas. The moral implications of holding both truths are enormous. Our capacity to act out of empathy, rather than impulse, is dependent on developing quiet reflection and moral imagination. We can pursue more than our immediate self-interest, and our highest self-interest can align with the needs of our fellow living beings. The realms of belief, particularly those beliefs that answer the big questions of life, are brought with respect for the different cultures in which they arise, their ways of life and geographic conditions. They are brought also with a great sense of reverence for those pearls of wisdom that appear in different parts of the world at given times forming the shared legacy of humanity. Welcome to our community of families and teachers, dedicated to fostering a nurturing learning environment that enables our students to become intellectually curious, resilient, and joy-filled lifelong learners. In its eighteenth year of operation, the New Village School provides experiential education from preschool through 8th grade. At the New Village School, we embrace the idea of a developmentally appropriate curriculum based on our observations of children today. We facilitate this learning through experiences inside and outside the classroom and by providing a nature-based, artistic education in which children have time to explore and engage in the world with all their senses. We prioritize small class sizes, meaningful academics, screen-free learning through 6th grade, social and emotional intelligence, outdoor learning, which takes place on local farms and in the natural beauty of Marin County and environs, as well as global travel. Our graduates have time to reflect on their experiences and develop a strong sense of self and community based on geographical, historical, and cultural orientation. They are well prepared for high school – and for their future. Come and experience the New Village School at an Open House or Morning Circle Tour hosted most Friday mornings at 8:30am. For more information, see Admissions . The New Village School is committed to embracing families and their children by instilling a culture of inclusiveness within our classrooms and of friendship among students across the grades. As a small school, teachers dedicate 1:1 time with each child, learning how best to develop their unique capabilities through understanding their individual learning styles. As a community of learners – children and adults – who strive to discover more about themselves, we communicate directly, create a safe and welcoming atmosphere for all, and hold monthly parent evenings to discuss childhood development, parental challenges, or specific class trips. We look forward to meeting you. What do we do? The process of growing up and gathering rich, colorful, textured childhood experiences along the way is a fundamentally important one for becoming a balanced, well-educated child and adult. Many experiences that we have as children can hinder the healthy unfolding of such a process in the most varied of ways. We see our task as teachers at the New Village School to do our utmost: Not to hinder this unfolding with any fixed philosophies No projection of what it means to be “successful” Not restrict learning approaches Not cause unnecessary stressful situations for the children... ...but rather in the observation of each unique individual child and the initiating and creating of a learning atmosphere, colorful and filled with sensory experiences, that allows each child to feel able and encouraged to explore his/her/their gifts, challenges, and potentialities, with an inner sense of ease and safety. It is the team of teachers gathered around the children: With whatever inspires them to engage with children in a healthy way In an ongoing process of observation and conversation with each other, that creates, fresh every day, the space and the relationships needed for the children to learn and develop an ever-expanding and deepening understanding of in which they are growing up In that sense then, the philosophy of the school is not to have a fixed philosophy according to which children learn, but rather to be sensitive to, and strive to understand, each and every child’s ways of relating to and coming to an understanding of the phenomena of the world. In this way, each child feels acknowledged, seen, respected and loved in his/her/their very own growing unique individuality. This means that each teacher has to be engaged in ongoing explorations of his/her/their biographical experiences, in order to prevent avoidable and unnecessary projections that can be a hindrance for a child. This ongoing biographical exploration also involves proofing one’s own perhaps still unconscious biases that would otherwise have remained hidden and would have affected others. With a conscious, conscientious, sensitive and careful approach to: The use of language The choice of stories The way content is brought… …we hope to offer the children the broadest and deepest picture of what it can mean to be a human being: Wherever we were born From whatever culture or religious background we come Whatever language we speak However we manifest our being human in physical form A key element in this work is giving our children the opportunity to develop a vocabulary for speaking about themselves and others, for describing others, and resolving conflicts with others, should they arise. We believe that in a time when the future is unpredictable, it is important to develop an inner picture, independent of circumstances, of what a meaningful inner life can be. This supports health on a physical, mental, and spiritual level. When we know our capabilities, challenges, and how to overcome them, we have a sound foundation upon which to move into whatever circumstances may meet us, with a sense of confidence. It is essential to feel at home, wherever we are. Therefore, in a globalized world, the ability to move easefully from one cultural perspective to another, from one language to another, and to have a deep sense of acknowledgment for our differences and similarities is vital. The ability to reflect on one’s experiences, actions, words, thoughts, and feelings is key to fostering healthy relationships both in a personal and working sense. Our students are encouraged to ask questions like, “What version of whose truth should I trust?” The closest they can come to understanding that is the development of a sense for what they feel to be true, based on as many perspectives as possible and their own inner authentic moral voice. If our students know what moves them to use their energy for their own development, while giving room for others to develop, they can better find their place in any societal context, in a way that is right for them. Being dependent on an external motivator can be detrimental or even dangerous. Understanding what hinders our ability to move forward is an incredible gift. With so many virtual experiences available in our society, a person can get lost, not knowing what is authentic and what is not. That can lead to substantial detrimental effects on a psyche. Kindness to one’s body, the vehicle which carries me; kindness to my feelings, which allows me to experience life in all its nuances, kindness to my intellect and spirit, which allows for a healthy love of SELF, allows for self acceptance. Experiencing one’s own agency and ability to create and initiate life experiences is essential for a sense of wholeness, and thus fulfillment. Being able to step in to guide situations that are asking for a direction is exceedingly useful to any social group. We provide young people with a sense of orientation in a time when many traditional orientation points provided by societies, religions, and cultures no longer exist. click here to learn more about How do we do it 100 Ebbtide Avenue, Suite 144 Sausalito, California, 94965 415 289 0889

How much does tuition cost? The annual tuition for the 2026-27 school year is $23,000 for preschool and $25,000 for kindergarten through 8th grade. Although kept deliberately low compared to other private schools, but still a large amount of money for so many, the New Village School has strived to keep tuition at a level that allows a broad spectrum of economic backgrounds to contemplate joining our school. We are always open to conversations about the financial aspect of joining our community. How does the New Village School differ from a traditional Waldorf school? At the New Village School we embrace the idea of a developmental curriculum initially developed by Rudolf Steiner, which we have updated to address the needs of children today. We facilitate this learning through experiences inside and out of the classroom, and by providing a nature-based, artistic education, in which children have time to explore and engage in the world with all their senses. We describe learning as an alternation of experiencing the world with our senses and reflecting on our experiences, making narratives, stories, and theories. Teachers are the facilitators of this process. They stand as passionate people worthy of imitation and natural authority, a bit like Renaissance artists with their apprentices. We work in thematic blocks of study of four to six weeks, like Waldorf schools do, and we cover a similar progression of subjects, with the life sciences in the middle grades and the hard sciences (physics, chemistry) beginning in middle school. We don't call ourselves "Waldorf" because we don't want to be bound to a formula. We want the freedom to adapt and change the curriculum according to the needs of today's children in the here and now. The children are our lead in determining what works. We may draw ideas from other educational approaches like unschooling, project-based education, and forest schools, as we see the need. Examples of things we emphasize or where we differ from Waldorf: We have deconstructed the role of the class teacher in favor of a team approach. This is because we find it healthier to not ask one individual to carry all responsibility for one group of children. We do have a morning lesson teacher up to fourth/fifth grade who carries most of the blocks, and we create continuity so the class is never starting completely anew with a teacher who doesn't have a relationship with them. We could say we want it all: the advantages of looping, continuity or relation, and the richness of many adults to be in relationship with and learn from. We call ourselves a village, a place where a number of adults are at work pursuing their passions and inspiring the children to do the same. We want our teachers to be inspired and to inspire in a variety of arts and crafts, music, and movement arts that enliven our curriculum. The Classroom Without Walls, with 2/3 of a day off campus every week The extensive travel program and integral fundraising work as a goal and milestone in the middle school The full school morning circles, where young and old come together regularly. As regards our relationship with Rudolf Steiner, we recognize that he lived in a fraught, difficult time in European history between two world wars. He was part of a budding movement to bring together wisdom from different cultures and worldviews. His message centered on the sacredness of each individual and the balance between individual freedom and a community of brotherhood/sisterhood. He expounded that intellectual Europeans needed to maintain their focus on scientific thought while opening up to the spiritual wisdom shared by the esoteric traditions of the world. He believed in teaching two world languages to open the mind--the brain pathways--to understand different ways of thinking. The way we interpret this today is to cultivate the meeting of cultures. We have a very diverse teaching team, with five or more languages and cultures represented in our midst, four of which feature in our language program. We likewise cultivate connections, through visiting teachers and experiences, to the indigenous cultures of our area, the LGBTQ+ community and other target or minority groups that enrich and expand our understanding of human experience, and teach us to "stand with" and care for each and every human and their reality. She came up to Chako San and shared, “I’m impressed and heartened to see how the kids interacted with not only each other, but the resplendent nature around them.” She went on to say that she could tell these were children not constantly exposed to media, as is so often the case across the nation. Amanda told us she was working on a documentary about screen-free living for teenagers. With teacher and parent permission, some of our little ones are now featured in her film. We are grateful to be a small thread in a much larger story about childhood, attention, and the importance of real human connection. Amanda recently shared an update with our community, and we are honored to pass it along. —Sam Wilder When work on The Luddite Club began, many people’s feelings about their tech use were still bottled up. There was a growing awareness that social media was not working in young people’s favor and that screen time was too high, yet a clear path toward collective change had not yet emerged. Since then, the conversation around tech, screens, and teens has exploded. Landmark books and investigations have shifted public awareness. Nationwide activism has led to substantial lawsuits, policy changes, and even an official warning from the Surgeon General. At the same time, the rapid rise of artificial intelligence tools has introduced new risks and amplified the already immense power of Silicon Valley. The Luddite Club has taken on new significance in this context. The film traces how one group of teens, beginning with a simple choice during the COVID era to disconnect from smartphones and social media, unexpectedly helped spark a broader cultural shift. What began as a small “Luddite Club” among friends grew into a national nonprofit, gained press attention, and inspired others to reconsider their relationship with technology. This is not a story about fame. It is about courage. It is about young people choosing presence over performance, books over feeds, conversation over scrolling. It is about reclaiming attention and rediscovering real-life connection. The documentary follows the teens as they collaborate with advocacy groups, organize phone-free gatherings, and participate in a growing movement that questions the impact of Big Tech on mental health and society. Featuring voices such as Jenny Odell, Brian Merchant, Julie Scelfo of Mothers Against Media Addiction, and Palantir whistleblower Juan Sebastián Pinto, the film weaves together activism, history, and deeply personal storytelling. At its heart, however, the primary storytellers are teens. Through a playful, mixed-media approach, teacher and student filmmakers reject sensational headlines and instead offer an honest portrayal of young people navigating a post-COVID world shaped by screens. The film captures everything from city hall hearings to phone-free meetings in Prospect Park, where the original Luddite Club gathered. The term “Luddite” has evolved. Historically, it referred to English textile workers who opposed mechanized machinery in the early 1800s. Today, it has been reclaimed by teens who are not anti-technology, but who are advocating for its thoughtful and humane use. They are not rejecting the future. They are asking us to shape it wisely. —Amanda Hanna-Mcleer We often speak at The New Village School about protecting childhood, about giving children time to play, imagine, build, and be fully present with one another. We see daily what happens when children are immersed in nature, storytelling, art, and meaningful work. Amanda saw it too, that afternoon in Old Mill Park. Her goal is to complete The Luddite Club by September 2026 for festival submissions. If this project resonates with you, we invite you to explore the Donate Page and consider supporting the completion of this important film. It arrives at a moment when many families are asking hard questions about technology and searching for both inspiration and a roadmap forward. We are grateful to be part of the conversation. By teaching artistically, our educators take into account the challenges of our time, the historical and geographical context in which the children are growing up, and the uniqueness of each individual child. We believe it is vital to guide children in learning how to ask meaningful questions, rather than delivering answers for them to memorize. Our lessons evolve from current knowledge and personalized conversations between teachers and students. This approach creates a learning environment where each child feels seen, heard, and acknowledged, fostering a deep sense of connection to the material and the world around them. Our teachers work to create atmospheres where learning can take place for every child, allowing them to engage at their own pace. Progress is carefully monitored and shared in parent-teacher conferences, along with written evaluations at the end of the school year. As students approach high school, they are introduced to conventional testing and grading, ensuring a smooth transition to future academic environments. We place a strong emphasis on nurturing relationships—between the child and teacher, the child and peers, and the child and the content of each lesson. This makes learning meaningful and ensures that each child’s motivation remains intrinsic, driven by their own curiosity and desire to grow. The National Eisteddfod, established in the 19th century, is an annual festival that celebrates the arts in all their forms. The spirit of an Eisteddfod is simple and powerful: gather artists together to sing, paint, draw, play instruments, write stories, recite poems, and dance the dances of the folk. It is a coming together in community, and yes, a friendly challenge that calls each person to step forward in their artistic courage. Recently, we brought this picture to the students through story: people traveling from far and wide to gather outside a great castle in Wales for the very first Eisteddfod. They came to share their gifts. At its heart was a beautiful truth that we hold dear at The New Village School: we are all artists. Our New Village School Eisteddfod honors this tradition, brought to us by our founding teacher, Meinir Davies, who grew up in Wales. For more than a decade, this has been a joyful and meaningful opportunity for our students in 2nd through 8th grade to contribute their art and share their voice. It is a moment to shine, and just as importantly, a moment to listen, to witness, and to celebrate one another. Each year, students perform before experienced adjudicators who offer thoughtful and encouraging feedback. The spirit is loving and uplifting. You can see in the students’ eyes how meaningful it is, whether they are standing in the spotlight or cheering from the audience. Eisteddfod has truly become one of the highlights of our school year. This year, Eisteddfod will be held on March 23 and 24 for students and adjudicators. Performances that truly stand out will be invited to share their work with the greater community near the end of the school year. Performance Guidelines Each student must perform at least once, either solo or in a small group of up to three students. Students may perform a maximum of two times. If a class or larger group has prepared something special, it may be included. However, each student must also present a solo or small group piece. Performance Categories Poetry Singing Musical Instrument Dance Stage Presence Matters Eisteddfod is more than a performance. It is a practice in poise and presence. We will guide our students in how to enter the stage, introduce themselves, carry themselves with confidence, and bow with grace. Every detail is part of the artistry. Teacher Approval All performances must be approved by teachers. We ask students to avoid teen pop content, inappropriate language, or overly silly material such as parody acts. If there is any question about whether a song or piece is appropriate, please check in with Maestra Lalla for final approval. We look forward to these days of courage, beauty, and community. There is something deeply moving about watching a child step forward, take a breath, and offer their art to our village. < Back 100 Ebbtide Avenue, Suite 144 Sausalito, California, 94965 415 289 0889

Within this core tenant, childhood is preserved through slowing down and allowing children to be children. At the Little Village, children play, grow food, prepare their meals, make the table beautiful, share a meal, tend to a garden, tend to their home away from home, sing, move, paint, draw, play, rest, and play some more! The Little Village School creates a daily and weekly form that allows for calm and ease. Within this form there is room for flexibility, spontaneity and creativity. When there is a natural rhythm to the day, children feel more at ease, which in turn creates smoother transitions and overall less of a need for loving discipline. Children enrolled in the Little Village are taught to see goodness in the world, in themselves and in others. The children are met with respect, kindness and warmth. They are seen and given genuine presence. Each day, life is celebrated in simple and joyful ways. The Little Village School protects, respects, and values childhood. We honor slowing down, allowing children to play, teaching children to be mindful of caring for their space, teaching children to be respectful of all humans, creatures and our Earth. We strongly encourage screen free childhood. We strive for as close to zero-waste living as possible. We care deeply for our parents/guardians and support them as they set boundaries, slow down, tell stories and create more joy. The Little Village thanks you for the opportunity for us to be a part of your child's precious early years. Read more... Read more... Traveling Near and Far - We do it by going off campus every week. We travel further and further afield as they grow older, eventually visiting countries such as Morocco, Mexico, Japan, London, Lisbon, Peru, refugee camps in Greece, and more. Read more... Absolutely everything. April 2022 Our twelve-year-old is about to embark on her class trip to Mexico. I’m not given the opportunity to chaperone. So I micromanage instead… “The suitcase can’t exceed 22 lbs. This is 47! You have got to pare this down! I see a lot of dresses, but did you bring anything you can get dirty in?” This is met with a groan. “Oh, and listen to Mr. Kyle’s email: ‘The children will be in classes from 1:30 to 6pm Monday to Friday. School requirements: be punctual, wear clean clothes, wear shoes all the time, and be respectful. The children will be integrated into all the curriculum classes and all the activities that the school may have.’ Wow, so you’re going to have to speak Spanish while you’re in school? Should we maybe practice speaking Spanish at home so you feel better prepared?” This is met with an eye roll. “Who are you rooming with?” This is met with an extemporaneous speech about the unfair, cruel teachers who are trying to ruin her trip to Mexico. “Okay, well, I know you’re not exactly best friends, but this is a good learning opportunity for you. And remember the New Village School rule: you don’t have to like everyone, but you have to love them.” This is met with a dramatic sigh. “Will you remember to eat a vegetable every once in a while? And not have too many sweets? How about sunscreen? And a hat? You know if you don’t wear your hat in the sun you will get sunstroke and DIE.” This is met with, “God, Mom, you are so dramatic.” (Well, isn’t this the pot calling the kettle black?) Dad takes matters into his own hands and emails the teachers: “With the weight restrictions and liquid restrictions, we're concerned that we won't be able to send enough sunscreen and bug repellent to last two weeks. Is it possible to provide full-sized bottles of both to put into the checked bag? We can provide several so that the whole group can use them.” Señora Cabrera responds cheerily, “Don’t worry, we can buy more in Tapalpa!” But obviously, we feel nervous about more than just adequate sun protection. This is our baby. Our firstborn. Traveling internationally for the first time without us. What if she forgets something at home? What if she’s homesick? What if she gets sick? There are many fears and many unknowns. But this is what we signed up for. We did our research. We went on countless tours. And this is the school we picked for our daughter, for our family. We were won over not just by the campus or the fresh Sausalito air. Not just by the teachers hailing from every corner of the world. But by the alums who came to speak at open houses. We were won over by the steady, self-assured way they spoke and looked us in the eye. By the strong sense of self they possessed, a quality I frankly envied as a young mom. And every single one of them spoke of how travel, especially international travel, was a key component of their development. How it helped them figure out who they are and how they fit into the greater world. Pretty soon, they are off on their red-eye flight, and we await an update with bated breath. Mr. Kyle delivers: “¡Estamos aquí! We’re here. We are staying in a lovely little hotel just above the intimate town plaza. We settled ourselves upon arrival, rested a good moment, then ventured out for a relaxed brunch of eggs and pancakes, chilaquiles and tacos, fruit, fresh juice, and other tasty little bites. By the early afternoon, we went for our first adventure: horseback riding and zip lining. Good times were had by all (with more photos to come). Then it was back to the hotel, where remarkably, even the most anti-nappers among them found themselves sound asleep for a solid stretch. We’re now off to bed. More good hours of sleep to come before our first morning activity (clay) and day of school in the afternoon. We will also head to Doña Rosa’s for our meals beginning tomorrow morning. I have heard for years about her legendary cooking and am quite excited. Buenas noches, con amor, de nuestro pueblo mágico de Tapalpa, Jalisco, Mexico, Señora Cabrera, Mr. Kyle y sus niños.” What helps settle my nerves is knowing that while our children are in the care of these teachers, they become their children. What these teachers provide for our children on these trips is incredible. They are mother, father, and auntie all at once. Soothing nerves. Setting boundaries. Settling upset tummies. We hit refresh on our emails a few times a day until finally another message arrives: “We made it to our hotel in Manzanillo around midday, and in a jiffy, everyone was in their swimsuit and in the pool or in the ocean. Throw in the buffet restaurant and the children were in absolute heaven. Our days were relaxed and fun, but active and long. Following hours of swimming and playing and chilling in the water, we ended our first two days with memorable shows put on by the hotel. I don’t want to spoil any stories best heard directly, so I’ll just say that we had some very brave ‘volunteers’ participate on stage the first night, haha.” I know when she comes home she will have so many stories to share. Stories she has because she has had the opportunity to discover who she is, separate from us and our influence. But it’s not just about the memories she is making. And it’s not just about how she has grown and matured in these last two weeks. It is also about us. Our practice of letting go. Of trusting that what we have taught has taken root. And that she is capable of making her own way in the world without us. < Back 100 Ebbtide Avenue, Suite 144 Sausalito, California, 94965 415 289 0889

Traveling Near and Far - We do it by going off campus every week. We travel further and further afield as they grow older, eventually visiting countries such as Morocco, Mexico, Japan, London, Lisbon, Peru, refugee camps in Greece, and more. Learning Entrepreneurship - We do it by teaching them how to earn money financing these trips from 7th grade onward. Self Sufficiency - We do it by teaching students how to grow, cook, feed, clothe and create shelter for themselves. Thinking Critically - We do it by teaching how to think constructively and creatively and how to proof that thinking within any setting. Our students reflect deeply on why we do things the way we do, and whether it is helpful to do so. The World is our Classroom - we retreat behind classroom walls only to reflect, read, write, think, and conceive new ideas that could serve the planet. Subjects are Aspects of a Whole - Everything we learn contributes to the understanding of the whole. We speak about what others call “subjects” as aspects of the Whole. Learning Languages - Every child learns Spanish. We do live in California after all. Each child also learns one more language: Punjabi, Japanese, Russian, and Arabic are current example offerings. There have been and will be additional languages as our classes grow and graduate. Varying Student Experience - We do it by offering the most varied opportunities through: Academic Discourse Performing Arts Visual Arts Woodwork Handwork Gardening Animal Care Boat Building Sailing And more! Self Development - We help our students experience the SELF in the most varied circumstances thus offering an opportunity to know who they are when they are their most capable and authentic selves. When using that inner barometer of the authentic self, it is much easier to be discerning around truth and untruth. Self Motivation - By offering the most varied ways of interacting with materials, other living beings and the world in general, the students have a chance to discover an activity or theme where they experience themselves as “motivated” from within. By having had at least one or two such experiences, students are more able to tap into that source of energy when they don’t have an immediate interest in a topic. We do it by ensuring our teachers bring content in a way that makes it obvious where its meaningfulness and usefulness lie in the grand scheme of learning. Child Studies - If we find that a student is not yet able to access that place of motivation, we take time to deeply study the child, alongside the parents, to come to a clearer understanding of what the hindrances might be. Meeting People From Many Cultures - We do it by speaking to people on our travels, sensing who the other is, and by welcoming those from different cultures and places. Respect and Reverence - We develop a profound reverence for all living organisms on our excursions into nature, both on land and sea. Caring for our Bodies - The body is seen as a vehicle, an instrument, that needs to be tuned and attuned to the authentic inner voice. Feelings are taken seriously, but more than that, we encourage students to ask themselves, “What do I do with these feelings so that I do not become them and they don’t affect others negatively?” Self Discipline - We do it by being self-motivated and self-disciplined, by being the guide of the SELF more and more over the years, by having teachers who live this way and are not subject to a boss (see our Leaderships Model). Our children see demonstrated every day what it means to be our own guides and to guide the school organizationally. Historical and Global Awareness - We use geography as the context for history. Societal questions such as racism, sexism, prejudice, war, societal change - to name a few - serve to allow the student to be aware and knowledgeable, as a 14-year-old student, why an event is taking place in the way it is now. click here to learn more about who does the work 100 Ebbtide Avenue, Suite 144 Sausalito, California, 94965 415 289 0889

The world is beautiful. The world is true. As the children progress into middle school truth becomes our leading theme. What is truth? First and foremost it is the fruit of an objective and honest approach to what we perceive with our senses. Secondly, truth is the authentic expression of one’s self. At age twelve, students develop the capacity to perceive other people and the world in a more objective way. They question why, observe and reflect, challenge social norms, formulate their own opinions, and ultimately ask themselves the most important question: who am I? At the heart of the teacher's work is the physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual health of each unique student. Our middle school curriculum is both creative and rigorous. The bulk of our curriculum continues to be organized in “blocks.” Block lessons are periods of time when the class dives deeply into a subject giving the opportunity for integrated learning with art, hands-on projects, and individualized topics. All social studies, history, geography, and science courses are taught in this way. One important function of learning in blocks is to keep a high level of enthusiasm and buoyancy with each new subject and the unique experiences that accompany it. The other goal is to serve through the subject the developmental mood and needs of each grade. No subject is relevant if it doesn't help the students to grow, as growing is the main thing they need to do at this time in their lives. Growing means feeling at home in their own skin, developing passions, trusting in themselves, meeting people and the world with openness and curiosity, being able to relate every subject to their personal experience. During this time, skills classes and subjects that require continued practice are taught as tracks. These include mathematics, language arts, Spanish, world languages, handwork, woodwork, and games. Classroom Without Walls (CWoW) Learning does not only happen inside the classroom. Once a week after their morning lesson, each grade leaves the campus with our CWoW outdoor education teachers. They continue to explore the beautiful nature surrounding the Bay Area but also take trips into urban areas for community service projects and museum visits aligned with the themes they explore in the classroom. Our middle schoolers continue gardening, cooking, and animal husbandry at our school gardens and local farms as part of the CWoW program. However, at this age they take on larger projects which they see from beginning to end. Below you will find the formative end-of-year middle school class trips each one a milestone in their development. 6th Grade: Two-week trip to Mexico where our students attend school in a small town in Tapalpa, Mexico where they are fully immersed in Spanish culture and language 7th Grade: three-week self-financed trip to Europe typically Spain, Italy, and Greece 8th Grade: three week trip to Patagonia embarking on a rite of passage “sit” for personal reflection. The duration of the sit depends on the class and each student’s level of readiness Science We follow a phenomenological approach to science, which implies a lot of time is devoted to the direct experience and observation of phenomena and to building the awareness that human narratives, models, and theories are constantly evolving and being debunked by new, more expansive ones.
