Along with that, I made friends within The Willows that I am still close with today even after we all moved to different states. The Willows provided me with an outlet where I could take risks knowing that I had a community of people supporting me in my journey. Alex Clayman ’21 graduated from New Roads School last year and is currently attending New York University pursuing a major in neuroscience on the pre-health track. She also interned at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York. While at New Roads she played on the soccer and volleyball teams and was in the Psychology Club and STEM Club. I have no doubt that the dedicated teaching and Willows style of education are the reason for my success at Harvard Westlake and I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunities and experience that The Willows gave me!  Birdie Reynolds, Class of 2024 The Willows really had an impact not only on our kids but also our family. Cheryl Cecchetto, Alumni Parent The Willows means everything to the Gueno family. I came to the school to visit, three times, and every time I knew this was where I wanted my kids to thrive and grow. They are the people they are today because of The Willows. Loma Gueno, Alumni Parent The community. The general feeling on campus. Everybody really genuinely cares about each other here. We're all very close. Over the years, since I've been here so long, it starts to feel like a second family. Simone Meltzer, Class of 2023 Action is fundamental to learning. Deep learning occurs when children are active participants in the learning process. This philosophy is the foundation of our curriculum. Lisa Rosenstein, Head of School The Willows feels like home, The Willows feels like a safe place. Not just for these kids but for us as teachers. We feel supported, we feel acknowledged. We feel like we've been entrusted with this great gift of being able to walk these kids through whatever years of teaching that we're given. You can see it in all of these kids. They feel safe. They feel like they are in a place where they can stretch their boundaries, where they can take risk and take chances. J.R. Liebert, Faculty I love the community, the teachers. I love the school trips, just being with my classmates and having fun. Not even just about what we're learning on the trips. It's just being with my friends. It makes me happy.  Daylen Groce, Class of 2023 I could probably still name every one of my classmates and teachers by name. It was a very intimate experience where the teachers were able to give attention to everyone and the students were able to create strong lasting friendships.  Brycen Tremayne, Class of 2014, Stanford Graduate  Next HAPPENING NOW Headlines and #Hashtags Facebook (opens in new window/tab) Instagram (opens in new window/tab) Class of 2026 Secondary School Acceptances READ MORE ABOUT CLASS OF 2026 SECONDARY SCHOOL ACCEPTANCES Belize Service Learning Trip! Parents are an integral part of life at The Willows. Inclusive, hard-working, and devoted, our parent volunteers enhance every corner of our campus with optimism and resilience. They represent the very best of giving and serve as shining role models for their children.  The WPA is a service and social-oriented organization dedicated to celebrating our children and our school and to enriching the educational experience of our students. Each parent is automatically a member of the Willows Parent Association (WPA). Working closely with our administration and faculty, The WPA volunteers support the operations of The Willows and participate in various fundraising, programmatic, service, and social events dedicated to advancing our mission and uniting our community in friendship. Parents may become involved and apply their talents, skills, and special interests in numerous ways, both large and small, to contribute to the life of our school.  From serving as a room-parent, assisting with hot lunch, fundraising for a portion of each year’s operating budget, designing the yearbook, working with the teachers on community service projects, chaperoning a field trip, or helping in the library, volunteerism enhances every aspect of life at The Willows. Parents serve as WPA co-chairs, committee chairs, room parents, and volunteers. Events, programs, or projects created or implemented by the WPA include Cultural Programming, Community Service Learning, Pacific Park Pier Party, Book Fair, Jog-a-thon, and the Spring Party. The WPA involvement adds enormously to the unique spirit of our community. The WPA plays a vital role in the life and community of The Willows, and each level of volunteerism is deeply appreciated. We are firmly committed to nurturing and sustaining a safe and open environment that empowers individuals and groups to discover and celebrate their identity. We embrace the many facets of diversity including race, ethnicity, religion, culture, national origin, gender identity, sexual orientation, ability, family structure, and socioeconomic status. We strive to build and cultivate our multicultural community by celebrating what makes each of us unique while continuing to foster the universal values that we share. We do this to equip our students with the perspectives and skills necessary to thrive in a complex, multifaceted, and increasingly interconnected world. We acknowledge that diversity, similar to democracy, is an ongoing process, and believe in the importance of committing to this work through engagement in ongoing dialogue, openness to learning and growing to increase our understanding, and the nurturing of equitable relationships at all levels across our campus based on respect and empathy. These values strengthen our community, promote collaboration, enrich our thinking, reflect our core values, and remain essential to the life of our school. The Willows is an intentional community. Each child is recognized as a unique individual and a valued contributor to our community. We celebrate each member of our community and want all individuals to feel that they belong, are respected, and treated with dignity. Diversity enriches the lives and learning experiences of all our students, families, faculty, and staff. We teach our children to embrace different viewpoints, beliefs, perspectives, and cultures and value the rich mosaic of our world. We are strategically focused on infusing diversity, equity, and inclusion into our community, classrooms, and curriculum. These efforts are led by the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee established by our Board of Trustees and our DEI Consultant Bridgette Blue. We acknowledge that as our Inclusivity Statement states, DEI is an ongoing work in progress. We continue to envision and work toward a world free from bias, hatred, and prejudice. We are committed to being upstanders in a global society as we model for and teach our students. Image Button Link DEI Resources Image Button Link DEI Events   We were all blown away by the inquisitive students and their insightful questions. In a world where critical thinking is at a premium, especially amongst our youth, it was heartening to see the students asking the “tough” questions.  Jason Cohen, Director of Facing Fear The Willows Stands... in the fight In Solidarity in the fight The Willows stands united in the fight against hatred, bigotry, prejudice, brutality, racism, and violence in all its forms. We stand in solidarity with all communities facing this type of hatred and denounce the rise of hate crimes within our society.  The Willows is an environment where all people are respected, included, and treated with equity. We promise to continue our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion work, as a community, to combat the systemic racism, violence, and hateful divisions gripping our nation. We are committed to actively be a part of the solution to these issues and to teach our students that we embrace multiculturalism and that we respect and treat everyone with dignity and empathy. We sincerely want our students and community to be steadfast agents of change, who will lead the way to a nation and world free of racism, hatred, and violence. We will continue to lend our voices to eradicating systemic racism in all its forms. In Solidarity The Willows stands in solidarity with all communities facing abuse and bigotry, and denounces the rise of hate crimes and prejudice within our society. We are outraged and condemn the hatred of and rapidly escalating violence against all communities, whether Black, Jewish, Asian Pacific Islander, LatinX, LGBTQIA+, Indigenous, or any other race, culture, or group facing senseless violence. We stand in solidarity with our Black Americans who have long faced systemic racism, racial behaviors, and violence. “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” wrote Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We believe that all people should be respected, included, and treated with dignity. To remain complacent in the face of racism or inequities is not acceptable, and The Willows supports our community members by engaging in conversations and actions to combat systemic racism and live up to our core value of inclusivity. We are listening, learning, and loving. There is much work to do, and we want to be part of the solution for our children, our community, our nation, and the world. We stand in solidarity with the Asian American and Pacific Islanders within our community, our city, and nation and denounces the rise of hate crimes, systemic racism, hate speech, misogyny, and violence towards the AAPI community.   The Willows stands in solidarity with our LGBTQIA+  community... We are proud to offer you, and the Los Angeles community, an outstanding educational environment–a place  where great minds grow .  Our school culture centers on a deep and resonant definition of education. Our curriculum focuses on the experiential exploration of each discipline. A Willows education inspires, motivates, and impels our students to question, investigate, and to take hands-on ownership of their learning. Extraordinarily powerful learning and deep thinking take place daily at The Willows. The Willows’ challenging academic program is complemented by an exemplary performing and fine arts curriculum, a full range of athletic teams, a rich and thoughtful social emotional learning and life skills curriculum, and extracurricular activities. Creativity is not restricted to the arts but fostered in every discipline. The arts, maker, design thinking, and technology are seamlessly integrated into our curriculum as essential tools for learning and for developing tomorrow's innovators and problem solvers. The Willows’ definition of a  great mind  also includes an emphasis on character and heart–the ability to communicate honestly, work collaboratively, take responsibility, and contribute meaningfully to the community and the world. We embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion and strive to continually cultivate our multicultural community. We prepare our students to become adults, who value empathy, make sound decisions, practice ethical behavior, and express joy. We encourage students to explore the road less traveled, to ask difficult and thoughtful questions, to take intellectual and creative risks, and dare to dream. We want our students to live the credo:  All things are possible. As we state in our mission, we know that each child brings an “extraordinary gift” to our community. We cherish our students’ curious minds and embrace every opportunity to help them flourish emotionally and intellectually, now and in the future. We want our students to live the credo: all things are possible. In order to do this, we strive to create a safe and nurturing atmosphere conducive to taking intellectual risks, independent thinking, experimenting, and dreaming. Our school culture, our flexible approach to innovation, and the beauty of our developmental kindergarten through eighth grade structure create a world where students are eager to learn and grow each and every day. Image Button Link Balanced Progressive Approach The Willows is dynamic and embraces innovation–not change for the sake of something different–but innovation that energizes curriculum, creates a dynamic campus climate, lends a new perspective to learning, and generates an exceptional community of learners. Image Button Link DK-8 Advantage   Willows students grow through the years on a single DK-8 campus, in an environment that recognizes the needs of each developmental stage while fostering connection and continuity. Image Button Link School Culture   The Willows is truly an exciting place. Vibrant student art graces the hallways. A constant hum of activity streams from classrooms and common spaces. The campus is alive with the love of learning and the “can-do” spirit. Our Cultural Values Citizenship Willows' Athletics Reflects our Community Spirit Traditions Unite Our Community Four-Year Alumni Reunion Citizenship To teach understanding, we start in our own backyard. Students are taught to express compassion, understanding, and friendship on a daily basis. Being a contributing part of a community and participating in community service projects does not solve global issues, but it is a starting point on a path of citizenship. Willows' Athletics Reflects our Community Spirit Our team sports philosophy is simple: Everyone plays. P.E. at The Willows stands for participation and encouragement. Our “no cuts” policy for sports teams ensures that all students may explore and participate in a new sport. Whether an experienced athlete performing at an elite level or a beginner learning a new sport, each student has an opportunity to play, have fun, and improve skills. Our flexible athletic department listens to students and lends support if there is an interest in a new sport. The Willows does not emphasize winning at any cost but places participation and sportsmanship above competition. Traditions Unite Our Community The Willows has an appreciation of tradition.  A few examples uniting our community are: Poetry Night–an annual night of poetry reading, dance, music, and visual arts that is the culmination of 5-weeks work with Deb Studebaker, our Poet-in-Residence, our specialists, and classroom teachers.  Step-Up, our end-of-year celebration, recognizing the accomplishments of each class as students move up in the school to the next grade level   Four-Year Alumni Reunion Each year the Head of School and Board of Trustees open our campus to Willows alumni, who are graduating from high school. This annual event is a time for former students, faculty, and parents to reconnect and reflect on their shared Willows experience.     “I just wanted to let you know that I’m so grateful for all the help that you and the Willows has given me, both as a student and an alumnae. I just really appreciate how much everyone at the Willows has supported me . . . Please tell my Willows family how grateful I am to have met them. Isis, Alum The Willows [is a] collaborative and intentional learning environment where children are encouraged to think, problem-solve, and ask good questions, not just have the right answers. We have a rich, supportive environment that allows a child to grow cognitively, socially, emotionally, and physically. The teachings of John Dewey have convincingly concluded that children learn best when they are active participants in the learning process. This philosophy is the foundation of our curriculum, which is designed to allow children time to think and discover. Hands-on experiences, engaging discussions, field trips, and collaborative activities are fundamental parts of the coursework. OUR INTENT IS THAT STUDENTS ACQUIRE THE TOOLS TO BECOME ACTIVE LIFELONG LEARNERS. DK-2nd Our DK-2 students are creative, caring, and curious about the world and their place within it. They become empowered as learners and thinkers in these formative years. Our DK-8 setting provides a distinct advantage that allows our youngest students to interact regularly with older role models as they learn to spread their wings, take risks, and thrive in a safe, nurturing atmosphere. DK-2nd Curriculum 3rd-5th Our Upper Elementary students are capable, adventurous, and thoughtful. Our third, fourth, and fifth graders grow through these three transitional years and develop into leaders and critical thinkers, ready to take on the challenges of middle school with confidence.   3rd-5th Curriculum Highlights of The Willows Lower School Program Looping A Focus on Creative Expression Technology Integration Interdisciplinary Learning Media Literacy Looping The Willows’ program actively addresses developmental needs and nurtures relationships. Teachers and students loop together for first and second grades and again for third and fourth grades. We have observed many benefits from looping: teachers and students during the second year jump right into familiar routines and new curriculum, and the teachers are equipped with a thorough understanding of the group’s social dynamics and their students’ learning styles.  A Focus on Creative Expression The culture of The Willows is devoted to tapping into our students’ imaginations and helping each student discover their unique talents. We foster creativity in every discipline and believe that an integrated approach to learning helps children make connections and gain a deeper understanding of course materials. Technology Integration The Willows has implemented a 1-1 laptop or device program beginning in Developmental Kindergarten and continuing through 8th grade. As a result, technology is seamlessly integrated with our academic and arts programs. Our technology curriculum is exciting, relevant, student-centered, and infused with the power of multimedia tools. We pride ourselves on the degree to which our teachers and student use technology as a tool for learning rather than as an end in itself.  Interdisciplinary Learning Interdisciplinary learning is a key focus at every grade level. In DK through fifth grade, teachers collaborate across the disciplines to create thematic units that build a range of skills.  Media Literacy Media literacy—the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media—is a crucial skill for students growing up in today’s information-rich world. We introduce media literacy in developmentally appropriate ways, ensuring that students build a strong foundation for critical thinking and responsible engagement with media. To help them understand and navigate these messages, we foster curiosity, questioning, and thoughtful discussion. We guide our students to recognize persuasive techniques, distinguish fact from opinion, and develop awareness of how media influences emotions and decisions.     Get in Touch About Us Employment Opportunities Get Social School Policies Facebook (opens in new window/tab) Instagram (opens in new window/tab) PHONE: 310.815.0411   FAX: 310.815.0425   8509 Higuera Street   Culver City , CA 90232 NOTICE OF NON DISCRIMINATORY POLICY AS TO STUDENTS The Willows Community School admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. These laws prohibit discrimination against individuals with disabilities in public accommodations, as well as the exclusion of qualified individuals with disabilities from participation and/or the benefits of any School program or activity solely by reason of the individual’s disability. As part of this policy, applicants and students (hereinafter “student”) with disabilities, or their parents/guardians (hereinafter “parents”), may request reasonable accommodations that would permit the student full and equal access to the goods, services and operations of the School, which include both physical and programmatic (academic services) access and school-sponsored activities, such as field trips.   Request for Accommodation Parents of a student with a disability who want to request a reasonable accommodation in order for the student to access the goods, services or operations of the School, shall make a request in writing to the Director of Teaching and Learning or Middle School Dean.    The request must identify: a) the benefits, goods, services, or operations to which the student requests full and equal access; and b) the desired accommodation(s) being requested.  For the purposes of this policy, verbal requests for accommodation shall also be deemed requests for accommodation; however, the School may ask that verbal requests for accommodation be followed up by a request in writing.   Notice of Need for Accommodation Circumstances may arise that provide reasonable notice to the School that an individual student may have a disability that may require the student be provided reasonable accommodation, whether or not the School receives verbal or written request for such accommodation.  In the event the School does receive such reasonable notice of a possible need for accommodation, the School will discuss with the student and the student’s parents to determine whether a reasonable accommodation is being requested and/or is required.   Reasonable Documentation of Disability Upon receipt of a written or verbal request for accommodation, or pursuant to any conversation regarding whether a reasonable accommodation is being requested and/or is required, the School may require such additional information as reasonably necessary to establish the nature and extent of the disability in question and the accommodation(s) being requested for that disability.   Case-by-Case Determination The School will address each case involving disability accommodation issues on a case-by-case basis.  The nature and extent of the reasonable accommodations provided by the School to the student, if any, shall be made in accordance with all applicable laws prohibiting discrimination on the basis of disability.  Subject to those laws, the School reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to determine what reasonable accommodations, if any, to provide to a student in a given case.  The School will inform the student and the student’s parents in writing of its decision as to reasonable accommodation(s).  The School will not provide accommodation(s) that would pose an undue burden upon its finances or operations, or that would endanger the health or safety of the student or others, or that would fundamentally alter the nature of the School or its goods, services or operations.   Please direct any questions concerning this policy to the Head of School.   2 42 U.S.C. §§ 12181 et seq. 2 The Code of Federal Regulations include extensive regulations and procedural requirements for purposes of implementing Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.  The Regulations applicable to Section 504 provide, however, that “[t]his part applies to each recipient of Federal financial assistance from the Department of Education and to the program or activity that receives such assistance.”  (34 C.F.R. § 104.2.)  The Paycheck Protection Program is administered by the Small Business Association (“SBA”) and not the U.S. Department of Education.  As such, while the School would need to comply with Section 504 including importantly its provisions against discrimination on the basis of disability, we believe the corresponding implementing regulations at 34 C.F.R. 104.2 et seq., which include various procedural requirements, do not apply to schools that receive a SBA loan, unless a school separately also receives federal funding from the U.S. Department of Education. 3 29 U.S.C. § 794. It is an intentional and integral part of our identity. We are an energetic, committed community of students, faculty, staff, parents, grandparents, alumni, and alumni families. Our community is an inclusive, diverse group from all walks of life united by our love for our children and our school. Our commitment to tuition assistance and providing a Willows' education to a broad range of qualified students is essential to sustain our socio-economic diversity and preserve The Willows spirit and culture. Our community involvement takes many forms. Throughout the school year, we seek out opportunities to reach out to our neighbors in the greater Los Angeles area to “walk the walk” with our students and demonstrate in a meaningful way the importance of getting involved and making a difference in the lives of others. Our annual speaker series, relationships with innovative educators and dynamic thinkers who inspire us, involvement with Culver City and Los Angeles, participation in local, national, and international organizations, and special events opened to our extended community are a few of the ways that we build strong partnerships that strengthen our programs, resources, and activities. The Willows maintains close ties with our neighbors reaching out regularly to support local businesses and organizations. As students embrace their individuality and experience themselves as part of both The Willows community and the larger community, they develop mutual respect and value collaboration. At The Willows, individual and community needs are balanced. Giving Back We believe We believe that as individuals, we thrive; as a community, we soar. Community Outreach I love The Willows because of the great education the children get, the caring they learn to give and the confidence they all have which will make them become responsible adults. - Willows Grandparent By definition people in a community support each other in a common goal, whatever that support may entail. The success of a community depends on having a diverse group of people who can bring different points of view to raise the vibration of the whole. It is important now, more than ever, to hold each other up and offer our support through our talents, our love and our giving so that we can keep that common goal of our community alive. - Ida & Josh Gad, Current Willows Parents Schedule a Tour Explore our programs Visit our media gallery Get in Touch About Us Employment Opportunities Get Social School Policies Facebook (opens in new window/tab) Instagram (opens in new window/tab) PHONE: 310.815.0411   FAX: 310.815.0425   8509 Higuera Street   Culver City , CA 90232 NOTICE OF NON DISCRIMINATORY POLICY AS TO STUDENTS The Willows Community School admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. However, we realize that the cost of tuition is beyond the reach of some families. We offer a comprehensive program of tuition assistance to help mitigate the costs for deserving families who could not otherwise afford The Willows’ tuition. Helpful information about tuition assistance: The Willows is a welcoming and inclusive environment for students and families of diverse socio-economic levels. All information regarding who receives assistance is strictly confidential. The tuition assistance program provides for more than tuition. We also cover a portion of other expenses such as trip fees, student fees, and school t-shirts. Tuition assistance at The Willows is completely need-based . We do not give merit scholarships to students whose families can afford tuition. Instead, we seek to help families who have demonstrated need. When you start your contract please decide whether or not to apply for assistance, not after your child is admitted. There are specific criteria you will need to satisfy if you do not apply for aid at the same time as the original admission application to the school.s Please take the time to look at the FAQ section of this website. If you have any questions, please call me in the Business Office at (310) 815-0411 or email me at [email protected] . We look forward to working with you in the upcoming year. Gladys Trejo  QUESTIONS? For questions or more information regarding tuition assistance, please contact: The Business Office Gladys Trejo: [email protected] Phone: (310) 815-0411 Ext. 1301 Email Gladys Important Note Because of our program’s scope, it is budgeted on a yearly basis, with careful consideration given each spring to the number of new financial aid students we can afford to accept. Although we do maintain sufficient contingency funds to assist full-pay families who experience significant adverse changes in circumstance once already at The Willows, we rely upon families of new applicants to disclose potential financial need at the time of original application to the school. Families that do not do so will not be eligible for aid consideration later, unless they can demonstrate major, post-admission reversals. Brycen Tremayne, Class of 2014, Stanford Graduate   Happening now Headlines and #Hashtags Juicer Feeds Facebook (opens in new window/tab) Instagram (opens in new window/tab) Class of 2026 Secondary School Acceptances Read More about Class of 2026 Secondary School Acceptances Belize Service Learning Trip! THE POET, THE SCIENTIST, AND THE DETECTIVE ALL SHARE SIMILAR TRAITS: THEY OBSERVE, THEY FIND CLUES, THEY EXPERIMENT. BIT BY BIT, THE PIECES COME TOGETHER. ~ DEB STUDEBAKER, POET-IN-RESIDENCE < > Writing is an essential tool for our students and poetry is a key component of our language arts curriculum. Our Poet-in-Residence Deb Studebaker works with students in DK through 8th grade brainstorming, writing, and revising original poetry, and collaborating with classroom teachers and specialists integrating music, art, and classroom curriculum with the poetry. For our youngest students, poetry is a playful, interactive experience connecting feelings and memories with language and images. The program continues through Upper Elementary and Middle School in developmentally appropriate self-expression, craftsmanship, discussions, performance opportunities, study of poets, free-writing, and writing challenges. During the fall and winter, our students are immersed in poetry–reading, writing, illustrating, and listening to poetry. As a culmination of their efforts, they share their creations with our community during Poetry Week–a celebration of creativity and community. “ Poetry accomplishes three of our goals: teaching writing structure and skills, instilling confidence and giving our students a performance opportunity in front of both a large and small group, and helping our students realize the importance and value of their own voice.  As a community we celebrate them and their accomplishments, as well as the joy of poetry and learning. ” – Lisa Rosenstein, Head of School Tour The Willows Explore Our Academic Programs   The Willows Poetry Anthology Get in Touch About Us Employment Opportunities Get Social School Policies Facebook (opens in new window/tab) Instagram (opens in new window/tab) PHONE: 310.815.0411   FAX: 310.815.0425   8509 Higuera Street   Culver City , CA 90232 NOTICE OF NON DISCRIMINATORY POLICY AS TO STUDENTS The Willows Community School admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. Emphasis is placed on participation, learning, and having fun, regardless of ability level. The goal is that each student develops or improves their individual skill base and experiences feelings of success and achievement, and that together our students and coaches experience the joy of working effectively as a team. Our Team Sports Philosophy is simple: Everyone Plays Marc Weiss, Athletic Director Athletics @ The Willows Our physical education curriculum provides an effective foundation for our interscholastic athletic program. As members of the Pacific Basin League, students from The Willows have the opportunity to compete against other Los Angeles schools. Beginning in fourth grade, students are encouraged to participate in after-school sports regardless of previous experience or expertise. Sports teams currently include flag football, soccer, basketball, baseball, girl’s softball, volleyball, track and field, co-ed tennis, and co-ed golf. Many of these teams were formed in direct response to specific student interest. Our “everyone plays” philosophy for Lower and Middle School physical education classes also applies to after-school sports. In the fourth and fifth grades, in particular, we emphasize participation and the fundamental skills of each sport. Our goal is to promote cooperation, team spirit, fun, and good sportsmanship. By sixth grade, interscholastic athletics becomes more competitive, and there are records, playoffs, and championship titles. While the amount of playing time for each team member is not equal, we continue to subscribe to the “everyone plays” philosophy, making sure that each team member plays in every game. As a rule, 82% of our Middle School students participate in a team sport, and 90% of our fourth and fifth graders play a sport. Due to this consistently high rate of involvement in the athletics program, we offer an A and B team in most sports to accommodate all players in grades sixth through eighth. Overall, we offer nine different sports, with 28 teams, and during the busiest season 101 games are scheduled, not including playoffs. While winning is not the primary goal of our athletics program, The Willows has won numerous league championships and sportsmanship awards since 2001. Our mission is to grow that gift by challenging our students to uncover meaning and significance in the world around them and to become capable, confident individuals  who demonstrate character, engagement, and a joyful passion for creative inquiry across a lifetime. Our Philosophy The Willows is committed to a balanced yet demanding progressive curriculum rooted in experiential learning and social values. We teach and model a zest for learning and the courage to take risks. We challenge children to challenge themselves and set high standards for academic excellence, which they pursue with energy and joy. We nurture a sense of compassion and community that begins at home, reinforcing what it means to be a respectful, involved citizen-of-the-world. We believe that great minds grow in a near-infinite variety of ways. In the spirit of the willow tree itself, our “great minds” are flexible, resilient, and beautiful at every stage of development. Why The Willows Virtual Visit The Willows Program Core Values Creative Inquiry at Our Core Challenging Academics in Balance Character Community Creative Inquiry at Our Core Creativity is essential to learning at The Willows. We are devoted to cultivating our students’ imagination and helping them discover their unique talents in an atmosphere that embraces questioning and exploration. As students examine new ideas from multiple perspectives and generate innovative solutions to problems, they learn that every individual voice is important. Creativity is not restricted to the arts; it is an integral part of every discipline. The creative process is central to our teaching: we embrace curricular innovation that energizes our program, creates a dynamic campus climate, and lends new insights to learning.  Challenging Academics in Balance We believe passionately in developing students’ critical thinking and problem solving skills. We are committed to a rigorous academic program founded on the progressive principles of experiential learning and thematic instruction. The Willows takes a balanced approach to this process, placing equal emphasis on challenging academics and social-emotional wellbeing. Our developmentally structured curriculum allows children to fulfill their intellectual, creative, physical, and social-emotional potential. Our integrated approach equips students to become lifelong learners who are able to question, discover, and make connections in an environment where it is safe to take intellectual and creative risks. Willows students come to understand the most important lesson of all: as a learner, anything is possible. Character The Willows prepares students to value empathy, accept responsibility, and practice ethical behavior. We foster character by emphasizing the development of social and emotional skills hand-in-hand with academic skills. Our program emphasizes the development of sound decision making skills, an appreciation of each individual’s impact on the community, a desire to contribute, and a commitment to engaging with the outside world. We guide our students out of the classroom and into the community to understand the issues faced in today’s world and to discover productive solutions.  Community Interpersonal connections and a sense of community are essential to a child’s motivation, self-esteem, and academic success. Willows students grow through the years on a single DK-8 campus, in an intimate, cohesive environment that recognizes the needs of each developmental stage while fostering connection and continuity. We emphasize mutual respect, cooperation, and collaboration, as teachers and students build lasting and rewarding relationships. We are dedicated to continually enhancing our multicultural environment by promoting a culture of inclusion and nurturing equitable relationships at all levels across our campus. As a result, our students appreciate individual differences and experience themselves both as individuals and as part of a team. We extend our borders beyond our campus and embrace the world. The students, parents, faculty, and administration of The Willows are a community of dedicated, life-long learners. We build bridges culturally and educationally by seeking ways to partner with our neighbors and engage globally. The word “community” is indeed an intentional and integral part of our name. Our Lower School students engage in hands-on activities designed to promote the love of learning and bring curriculum to life. Curiosity, wonder, and creativity are interwoven with skill development, social emotional growth, and critical inquiry as our youngest students spread their wings and soar in a safe, nurturing environment. THE WILLOWS DK-2 students  are creative, caring, and curious about the world and their place within it. They become empowered as learners and thinkers in these formative years as they grow and learn through the years in a balanced yet academically challenging, creative environment. We believe, and research supports, that both academic achievement and social emotional intelligence are essential components of a student’s education. So, our integrated program is designed to promote both the academic, creative, and social-emotional growth of our students. Our DK-8 setting provides a distinct advantage that allows our youngest students to interact regularly with older role models as they learn to spread their wings, take risks and thrive in a safe, nurturing atmosphere.   Philosophy & Goals The primary grades are a stimulating and active time filled with thrilling cognitive and social emotional growth. During these years, a deep sense of community is instilled within our students, as we nurture and support them to explore and share their innate gifts. In DK-2nd grades, our main academic goal is to equip students with the foundational skills they need to be active, engaged, and successful learners. They formulate questions, develop strategies to find solutions, listen critically, communicate clearly, organize materials and ideas, work collaboratively, and seek assistance when needed. We strongly believe that communication between parents and faculty supports student growth. We ensure that parents are aware of Lower School events and develop strong relationships with them. Rather than judging student progress only through standardized or traditional tests, teachers work closely with administrators to track student learning through a thoughtful combination of quantitative assessments such as short and long-answer tests, qualitative tools like personal reflections and written responses, project-based presentations, portfolios, classroom observations, and one-on-one oral and written evaluations. The results of these comprehensive assessments are communicated to parents in a variety of ways. Parent-teacher conferences are held in November, March, and June, and written evaluations are sent home before the first and final conferences. Each evaluation is comprised of several descriptive narratives on core subjects as well as social-emotional observations. Additionally, we believe that students play an important role in communicating information about their learning and growth. To this end, students lead yearly Exhibitions, where they have an opportunity to share projects with the school community, with an emphasis on process and making learning visible to others. School-Wide Theme Each school year since 2000-2001, our faculty and students come together across grade levels to explore a school-wide theme. Launched each fall, the annual theme is incorporated into curriculum through classroom projects, the arts, and athletics. The 2025-2026 school-wide theme is STRUGGLE . Launched each fall, the annual theme serves as a way to re-imagine and re-interpret longstanding curricular units. The theme is incorporated into curriculum through classroom projects, the arts, and athletics. Our 2025-2026 school wide theme is STRUGGLE . To struggle is to face challenges to achieve growth, progress, and true learning. We will encourage our students to embrace struggles with optimism and the expectancy of growth accentuating that struggle is not always a negative experience but a steppingstone to growth. Struggle develops problem-solving, deep learning skills, and a growth mindset. Our school-wide theme will be incorporated into our curriculum as our teaches share the positive effects of struggle and perseverance. Poet Robert Frost stated, “The best way out is always through.” Hard work, accepting challenges, and resilience can lead to amazing accomplishments. Past Themes 2024-2025 2023-2024 2022-2023 2021-2022 2020-2021 2019-2020 2018-2019 2017-2018 2000-2017 2024-2025 Our 2024-2025 school wide theme was HOPE, which has been a call to action for our school as we celebrated our 30-year anniversary. Our community today echoes the strength and “can-do” spirit of our first community of founders that banded together to achieve the impossible and opened The Willows in record time. Hope is the driving force behind everything we do. Our school credo: all things are possible places emphasis on hope and optimism. Our students and community embraced the optimistic nature of hope deeply knowing that with diligence and conviction they will reach their dreams. By providing teacher guidance and fostering a sense of ownership, we cultivated learning experiences that empowered our students to envision a brighter future and inspire resilience and positivity in the face of challenges. Together, we believe that with hope as our guide, every student can make a positive impact on the world. 2023-2024 Our 2023-2024 school-wide theme was  STRENGTH! The many definitions of strength, both mental and physical–firmness, durability, power–was integrated into curriculum across disciplines. Together we investigated mental, physical, and scientific strength and the aspects of struggle that lead to strength, as well as how to create and develop strength. We encouraged our students to believe in themselves and their personal strength as we examined strength of character, the strength to be yourself, the strength to take appropriate risks, the strength to say “no,” and the strength it takes to be upstanders. 2022-2023 Our 2022-2023 school-wide theme was IMPACT! Defined as having “a marked effect or influence,” impact was integrated into curriculum as together we investigated how we might embrace “impact” and explored the impact on the environment, the social emotional nature of impact, and impact on all disciplines. We encouraged our students to believe in themselves, their ideas, and their voices, and recognize the impact they have in their daily lives at The Willows and in the future of our nation and global society. 2021-2022 Our 2021-2022 school-wide theme was DREAM,  which was selected by our students during our 2020 study of the election process to parallel the 2020 elections in our nation and bring voting, elections, and the democratic process to life for our students. We explored how to use our imagination and dream while also focusing on the work that must be done to achieve our dreams. Dream related directly to our school credo: all things are possible. 2020-2021 Our 2020-2021 school-wide theme was ILLUMINATE which lit up our year with optimism and a bright outlook. We spotlighted our students, cast a light on topics to gain new perspectives, and dug deep to enlighten ourselves, and brighten the world around us . “Look at how a single candle can both defy and define the darkness,” wrote Anne Frank whose words speak directly to our world today.  2019-2020 In honor of our 25th Anniversary and in honor of our founders, we brought back the inaugural 2000-2001 school-wide theme "The Ties that Bind Us" as our 2019-2020 school-wide theme. Since 1994, our ties have been strong, uniting all of us through the years. We celebrated our ties to each other, to our unique educational program, to our traditions, innovations, and our phenomenal progress. Our students explored their individuality as well as their ties to our community, family, city, state, and the world around us. As a school, we closely looked at our cross-disciplinary, integrated learning and the ties that bind all subjects. 2018-2019 The 2018-2019 school-wide theme was "Story." The theme of story was incorporated into curriculum in numerous ways as we investigated how each of us has our own personal narrative, how stories enhance empathy and understanding, and how stories passed down create history. Story has a natural relationship to language arts, reading, and the library but also to each discipline including word problems in math, the story of a science experiment, an athletic team's story each season, and the story of a work of art or a piece of music. 2017-2018 Our 2017-18 school-wide theme was "REACH." During that year, students explored "reach" as it pertained to their studies, personal lives, and the world around them. Reach was investigated in relation to our community members reaching beyond themselves and gaining a better understanding of each other and our globally connected world.  2000-2017 201 School Library | The Willows Community School Skip To Main Content Search search-form#clearSearch'> Clear Search Menu Menu About Us Head of School Welcome Mission/Philosophy/Core Values History News Faculty/Staff Why The Willows? In the Middle School, music is a regular part of the program with a variety of extracurricular and electives offered. Students may also select from a wide range of classes that focus on music history and appreciation, theory and composition, and vocal and instrumental performance. Our choral program includes five choirs that annually receive numerous first place awards at choral competitions. Learn More Drama & Dance Drama and performance opportunities are carefully integrated into classroom curriculum with the goal of promoting self-expression, confidence, and cooperation. Our program is designed to spark the imagination and recognize each child’s creative voice. Three Middle School theater productions are presented each year as part of the curriculum in our state-of-the-art black box theater or larger gymnasium stage.   Learn More < > Get in Touch About Us Employment Opportunities Get Social School Policies Facebook (opens in new window/tab) Instagram (opens in new window/tab) PHONE: 310.815.0411   FAX: 310.815.0425   8509 Higuera Street   Culver City , CA 90232 NOTICE OF NON DISCRIMINATORY POLICY AS TO STUDENTS The Willows Community School admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. THE M STANDS FOR BOTH MATH AND MAKER." At The Willows, we regard STEAM as STEAM 2  . The M stands for both Math and Maker. All of these disciplines–science, technology, engineering, art, math–are seamlessly integrated into our curriculum. Our Maker program allows students to fully engage in each discipline. Our students apply the Stanford University d.School of design thinking steps to creatively think critically and analyze effectively. Problem solving, doing, designing, and making all invigorate curriculum and bring learning to life. The Willows has had a strong Science, Technology, and Mathematics curriculum in place since the founding in 1994. While we have always strived to integrate subjects across the curriculum, the STEAM 2  approach (one that is inclusive of the Arts and Maker) truly invites the interdisciplinary bridging of subjects while honoring the skills inherent in each. DESIGN THINKING Read More about DESIGN THINKING MAKER Read More about MAKER STEAM2 Read More about STEAM2 Great learning is open-ended, dynamic, authentic, and interconnected. With this in mind, we continually enhance our Maker and STEAM programs to challenge our students to DESIGN, MAKE, CREATE, and EXPLORE in very intentional ways. STEAM 2  builds our students’ capacity for empathy, physical skill set, and problem solving abilities. We inspire our students to realize their potential and view themselves as makers, designers, and doers, who take action to discover and create. A maker mindset enables students to take ownership of their learning and fully engage with the subject matter. STEAM 2  activates and energizes learning, expands curriculum, and empowers students to take their Maker mindset, design thinking, and skills into all experiences, preparing them for our constantly evolving world. Our students are well equipped and ready for the 21 st  century global community. They become the designers of their own destinies. "It was actually my time at The Willows that ended up inspiring my love for Apple and its products. Through designing games, editing videos, and doing assignments on the student laptops we got in 8th grade, I developed a real appreciation for Apple's design and integration between software and hardware. My math/science interests continued through Harvard-Westlake, Cornell, and now Apple, where I get to design the next generation of hardware as a Product Design Engineer. It's a 13-year dream come true - one that started at The Willows." James Wu, Willows Alum Where does this all happen? Across our campus in our makerLabs, designLab, STEAMStudio, outdoor spaces, and designated classroom areas. What is your homework philosophy? What are the parent volunteer opportunities at The Willows? How can my child participate in sports at The Willows? Do you require students to take standardized tests? Do you give grades? The Willows does not issue “traditional” report cards with grades of A, B, C, D, and F. In the Lower School, parents receive written narratives twice each year that describe in detail their child’s progress over the recent months. In addition, there are three parent/teacher conferences each year. In the Middle School, parents receive evaluations at the end of each semester. These evaluations include written narratives about each class along with a percentage in the academic classes. There are also three parent/teacher conferences each year. In both divisions, teachers also communicate frequently with parents throughout the year by telephone or email. What is your homework philosophy? At The Willows, the purpose of homework is to reinforce skills introduced in the classroom and to help children develop the organizational skills that come with completing assignments independently and turning them in on time. We appreciate that children need time to pursue interests outside of school, and, more importantly, to enjoy relaxed, unstructured time at the end of their busy days. With all of this in mind, teachers aim to assign a reasonable and age-appropriate amount of homework each night that builds habits of responsibility and accountability while fostering a strong home-school connection. In Lower School, we do not assign homework on the weekends. While we recognize that every child works at a different pace, some estimates per night are as follows: Developmental Kindergarten/Kindergarten - none; we encourage 5 to 10 minutes of reading 1st and 2nd grade - 20 minutes 3rd - 4th grade - 30 minutes 5th grade - 45 minutes 6th - 7th grade - 60 minutes 8th grade -60-90 minutes To learn more about our academic program, please visit our Programs page. What are the parent volunteer opportunities at The Willows? The Willows has an active parent association that coordinates numerous parent activities. We welcome and encourage parent involvement in many committees, including the following: Library Committee Hot Lunch Committee Cultural Events Committee Fundraising: Book Fair, Annual Auction, Party at the Pacific Pier To learn more about parent volunteer opportunities, please visit the WPA page. How can my child participate in sports at The Willows? All children participate in the physical education program at The Willows. A gift from the Global Data Registry

When the Global Data Registry crawled http://www.thewillows.org/?utm_source=GBP&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=office, we found no structured data — the language AI systems use to understand and describe a business online.

Schema is how ChatGPT, Google, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity know what your business does and how to describe you accurately to your customers. Without it, AI systems are guessing.

The most important field in this block is sameAs — a verified edge connecting your website to your permanent record at the Global Data Registry. This is a free, confirmed link to a real verified source. It costs nothing and gives your website a confirmed node in the graph that AI systems traverse when building answers about your business.

Copy the block below and paste it into the <head> of your website. Or drop it into ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini and ask it to extend it with your full business details — that is the fastest path to a complete schema record.

▶   What is schema?

Schema is a standard vocabulary maintained at schema.org that lets websites describe themselves in a language machines can read. When you add schema to your website, you are telling AI systems, search engines, and knowledge graphs exactly what your business is and how it connects to the rest of the web.
