Thank you for your help and kindness. 2025 UCO Annual Fundraiser - Drop-in and Make a Difference (10/04/25) Thanks to your support, our annual fundraiser was a great success. We could not have done it without you! Dakshini Bengali Association of California at the Drop-in Center (November 2024) The DAKSHINI Bengali Association of California joined us to prepare and serve warm meals for our guests. Their kindness and commitment turned an ordinary Sunday into a truly special day. It was a pleasure to work alongside such compassionate individuals, and we are immensely grateful for their support. Thanksgiving Giveaway 2024 UCO and Food Finders provided turkeys and all the fixings to seniors and families with children at Cesar E. Chavez Park in Long Beach, ensuring they could enjoy a warm and festive Thanksgiving meal. We were also delighted to extend this gift to families and seniors at our Drop-in Center, spreading holiday cheer and gratitude to those we serve. Thank you to everyone who made this possible. 2024 UCO Fundraiser - Drop-in and Make a Difference (09/28/24) Thank you to everyone for making this a fun and successful event. We also offer rental assistance and help with job search. How It All Started In 2006, Janet Rhodes, a member of First Congregational Church Long Beach (FCCLB) realized that when the city closed the main library on Sundays, the homeless community in downtown Long Beach had no place to go. On the Sunday after Christmas 2006, Janet, with support from Rev. Jerry Stinson and other members of FCCLB, opened the church campus to those experiencing homelessness and offered cold cereal, sandwiches and a safe place off the streets where guests could relax, socialize and use the computer lab. These simple acts of kindness were the genesis for Urban Community Outreach’s drop-in center; and in 2008 UCO officially became an independent nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. Since then, UCO has grown to offer a variety of health-related and social services. In 2008, nurse Ann began making regular monthly visits to the drop-in center to provide wellness screenings. In 2010, a doctor and her team of college students joined UCO once a month for private consultations to our guests. In 2015, case managers started working at the center, helped clients apply for government ID cards, and provided referrals and funds for shelter/housing and other services. UCO Today The drop-in center has an Executive Director, a chef, and volunteers to prepare 130-250 hot meals every Sunday (except in July) using primarily rescued food for 130 to 250 guests. Guests can enjoy their meal in the Patterson Hall between 1:30p and 3:00p or pick up food to go. We also offer ready-made salads and sandwiches, bread, canned goods and fruits donated by local stores. We are open every Sunday of the year (except the first weekend in December and the month of July). Walk-ins are welcome or contact Cherry Bush ( [email protected] ) for groups of 5+ people. Volunteering schedule a nd activities : 9:00am – 1:00pm Meal prep 1:00pm – 3:00pm Serving our clients 2:30pm – 4:00pm Clean up Donations : We accept gently used clothes, shoes, blankets and hygiene products, individually wrapped snacks, pantry food and dog food. Contact Cherry Bush to schedule donations drop off ( [email protected] ). Directions & Parking : We are located at 241 Cedar Avenue, Long Beach, CA 90802. Entry is through the steel mesh doors on Cedar Avenue. Once you are in the courtyard, enter the dining hall on the left. A coordinator or kitchen staff member will help you get started. Parking meters near the Drop-in Center are free on Sunday, but please check each individual area. The parking meters are enforced on some major streets like Pacific and Pine Avenues.
