Life Changing Impact
It doesn’t take much to begin restoring hope and helping someone take their next step toward healing.
At Union Rescue Mission’s Downtown Ministry on Skid Row, our Hope Gardens Family Center, and Angeles House Family Center, we know a warm meal, safe shelter, and hot shower are just the beginning.
That’s why we meet our guests where they are, offering support for their mind, body, and spirit. We walk along side them as they rediscover their strengths and work toward long-term stability.
Thanks to your generous support, we never turn a woman, child, or family away — and we’re the only mission on Skid Row that keeps families together.
We embrace everyone with the compassion of Christ so they can find the way home.

Mission To help end the cycle of homelessness by walking alongside individuals and families on their journey home—offering compassionate care, emergency services, transformational programs, education and job training, life-building skills, and the support needed to achieve lasting stability and thrive in community. Our Core Values Respect We believe everyone is deserving of dignity, love and compassion. By honoring each person’s value and worth, we affirm their dignity. (Psa. 23:5; Rom. 12:3) Relate Life transformation occurs in the context of committed relationships where there is trust and compassion. A focus on a loving God and loving others forms the foundation of relationships. (Psa. 23:1; John 13:34-35) Redeem We do our very best to help our guests rebuild their lives and form a trusting relationship with God. Redeeming a life is intentional and sacrificial because it is costly in actions and resources. (Psa. 23:2; Col. 3:12-17; Gal. 6:1) Restore Restoration corrects and strengthens a person, so they receive back more than has been lost. The God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. (1 Peter 5:10) Number of men served Number of women served Number of children served Number of people housed every night Statement of Faith Union Rescue Mission is committed to the following essential truths of biblical Christianity. We believe in one God. Creator and Lord of the Universe, the co-eternal Trinity; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We believe that Jesus Christ, God’s Son, was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, lived a sinless life, died a substitutionary atoning death on the cross, rose bodily from the dead and ascended to heaven where, as truly God and truly man, He is the only mediator between God and man. We believe that the Bible is God's authoritative and inspired Word. It is without error in all its teachings, including creation, history, its own origins, and salvation. Christians must submit to its divine authority, both individually and corporately, in all matters of belief and conduct, which is demonstrated by true righteous living. We believe that all people are lost sinners and cannot see the Kingdom of God except through the new birth. Justification is by grace through faith in Christ alone. Those who reject Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior in the present life shall be raised from the dead for eternal suffering and separation from God. Those who accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior will be present with him for eternity in heaven. We believe in one holy, universal, and apostolic Church. Its calling is to worship and witness concerning its Head, Jesus Christ, preaching the Gospel among all people groups and demonstrating its commitment by compassionate service to the needs of human beings and promoting righteousness and justice. We believe that Jesus Christ will personally and visibly return in glory to raise the dead and bring salvation and judgment to completion. God will fully manifest His kingdom when He establishes a new heaven and new earth, in which He will be glorified forever and exclude all evil, suffering, and death. We believe in the necessity of the work of the Holy Spirit for the individual’s new birth and growth to maturity; and also for the Church’s constant renewal in truth, wisdom, faith, holiness, love, power, and mission. Yet in Los Angeles, many families are pushed into homelessness by economic hardship, health challenges, and trauma. The reality is deeply concerning—66% of families experiencing homelessness are led by single mothers, and more than 7,000 families in our city are without a secure place to call home. That’s why we created Hope Gardens , a sanctuary nestled on 77 acres in the foothills of Sylmar, California. This transitional housing campus provides a safe and supportive environment for single women and children facing homelessness, along with permanent supportive housing for senior women at our Sequoia Lodge. At Hope Gardens , women can move from homelessness to self-sufficiency within a year by participating in our Damascus Road to Recovery Program for Women . Our services include long-term rehabilitation, spiritual care, and personalized support to empower women and their children to build a brighter, more stable future. Here, women and children who have experienced homelessness find not only a safe place to stay, but also compassionate support, counseling, and practical resources to help them build a stable and hopeful future. Other services offered at Hope Gardens include: Youth Development Program The Youth Development Program provides a supportive and empowering environment for children who live with their mothers at Hope Gardens Family Center. They receive the following support and services: Onsite tutoring Social and character education Mentoring Leadership development Family therapy Planned recreational activities Infants and preschool-aged children participate in PEEPS, our onsite childcare and early childhood development program. Senior Care Program The Senior Care Program provides safe, affordable permanent housing for older women who have experienced homelessness—offering a supportive environment where they can age with dignity and stability. They receive the following support and services: A single-occupancy room with a personal bathroom Three meals a day 24/7 security Transportation Medical and legal referrals Access to a library, computers, dining area, kitchen, sewing room, living/community room, atrium chapel, patio, and garden grounds Our goal is to help every senior woman, mother, and child transition from the streets of Skid Row into the safety and stability of Hope Gardens Family Center—a place where they can begin to heal, restore hope, and take steps toward finding their way home. Assessments include: ASAM (American Society of Addiction Medicine) Arizona Self-Sufficiency Matrix ESL Test (English as Second Language) ACE Score (Adverse Childhood Experiences) TABE Score (The Adult Basic Education) Phase 2: Emmaus (6-9 months) Designed to find the root cause of addictions, which we define as “pain management.” We offer a trauma-informed approach to recovery with the help of our Pepperdine Mental Health Clinic. The goal is to help men reconnect with God, self and others. This requires healing and an encounter with Jesus in a loving church community. Areas of emphasis include: Christian foundation Prayer and contemplation 12-Step recovery Addiction education Emotionally healthy relationships Individual and group therapy Anger management Grief recovery Financial planning Education and vocational training Trade schools and training assignments Regular chapel and church engagement Phase 3: Apprenticeship (up to 18 months) Emmaus graduates are encouraged to complete three terms of six-month apprenticeships to ensure their successful transition to independence. Our men use this time to build a solid employment history, attend school, or get vocational training. Graduates continue to live at the Mission as they seek permanent employment, save money, look for affordable housing. Healing is possible—a new future starts here. Take the next step. Union Rescue Mission (URM) is one of the largest missions of its kind in America — bringing help and hope to men, women, and children experiencing homelessness in Downtown Los Angeles. URM was founded in 1891 by Lyman Stewart, president and founder of Union Oil Company. George A. Hilton served as the first superintendent of the Mission, originally known as the Pacific Gospel Union. During those early days, URM took to the streets in gospel wagons to offer food, clothing, and salvation to the less fortunate. Over the years, URM has continued and expanded its efforts to feed both the body and the soul, helping individuals and families break the cycle of poverty and achieve self-sufficiency. URM Circular Timeline Component 2020 April 14th, 2022, families began moving into Angeles House, Union Rescue Mission's new family bridge housing center in South Los Angeles, serving up to 86 families. Why Is Homelessness So Difficult To Solve? A severe housing shortage: Los Angeles County has a shortage of more than 500,000 affordable housing units. This drives up rent and makes it nearly impossible for low-income individuals and families to find stable housing. Barriers to employment: Without reliable transportation, a safe place to store belongings, or access to food, shelter, hygiene, and safety, maintaining or even finding a job becomes extremely difficult. Past justice system involvement can also create additional obstacles. Limited access to healthcare: Many people experiencing homelessness struggle to get the care they need. Ongoing challenges include untreated chronic illnesses, lack of access to mental health support, and limited availability of substance use recovery programs. Deep collaboration, focused emergency response, and innovative programming caused homelessness to decline by 4.0% in LA County and 3.4% in the City of LA.
